He took a long time answering. “Don’t worry about the fight.”

“I have to.” She cupped his face with one hand. He leaned into her palm briefly, then she stepped back, holding that hand against her chest, her heart.

“You don’t. It needs to be done.”

“What about the Blood Opal and the vampires? You all need to focus on that, not some fight you can do later.”

He leveled his grave expression on her. “It’s not just some fight, Tamaska.”

The way he said her name made her pause, cooling the anger building in her.

“We need to make the pack strong and united before we can take back the Blood Opal or fight any more vampires. Shota’s challenge is part of that.”

Tamaska looked away, shaking her head. “It shouldn’t be like this.”

“Yeah well.” He sighed and took her once more in his arms. “It is. It’s the way of the pack. You need to accept it.”

“I’m trying, I am. But… Kodiak? Should I leave?”

Kodiak pressed his lips to hers. This time his kiss was deep, hot, intimate and she wanted more. But they weren’t alone, and he ended it before it could burn out of control.

He rested his forehead against hers and inside, something shifted, reached out and curled against him. He was magnetic, danger, comfort, and home.

Then he lifted his head. “I’ll have none of that. You’re staying.”

“What about this…bond?” She looked into his eyes, where softness mixed with desire before Kodiak got control of his emotions.

“You feel it, then?”

Tamaska nodded.

“Well, that’s…good.”

“Kodiak, we need you inside,” called Channing from the back door.

He sighed heavily. “I have to go.”

“I know, but I want to know what it means.”

He kissed her again. Like a slow dance of a song, intimate and moreish. He didn’t need to tease her lips apart; she opened them willingly and met his tongue. The taste and heat of him streaked through her, turning her knees weak, and she clung to him, wishing they were far from here, wishing they could strip down.

He broke the kiss and sighed. “I’m sorry, but I have duties. We can talk more after the fight.” He pulled away from her and walked towards the clubhouse.

Tamaska went to follow him, but Ash caught her arm, stopping her.

“Hey,” Tamaska said. “I want—”

“You can’t.”

“Tamaska, please stay with Ash until after the fight. Promise?” Kodiak looked back at her, gaze hard, like he’d already donned his alpha crown.

“I promise,” she said.

He nodded and left, going inside.

Ash sighed. “Sorry, you need to let him go. He has to focus.”

“I know, I know,” she said.
