No. Never. You’re the idiot who brought a human into our pack.

You’re blind. You’re not seeing the situation clearly.Kodiak didn’t make the mistake of releasing him. You’re not thinking straight. There’s more to her than a simple human.

How could you bond with a human? You’re disgusting.

Shota’s question echoed in Kodiak’s mind.

That had to be it. There was something special about Tamaska. There had to be, if the vampires wanted her, if he had bonded with her. He just needed the chance to find out what it was that made her unique.

Kodiak maintained his grip on Shota’s neck as blood filled his mouth. His wolf was keen to finish the fight.

But he didn’t want it to end this way.I’ll forgive you if you yield now. There’s no reason to lose your life.

You yield, Shota said.

He wasn’t about to do that. He’d maybe let him live, announce a change in these things, but right now he needed to end this.

His way.

Kodiak shook Shota hard and fast, then let go.

Shota stumbled, disorientated from the blood loss. He hit the ground and didn’t rise, just moved his paws in the dirt.

Kodiak raised his head and howled.

He doesn’t have to die.Kodiak spoke to the pack through the connection. Not just to Shota, but to them all.I grant him leniency. To a new way forward.

Fuck you and your human weak ways. Fight.Shota picked himself up.

He rounded on the injured wolf. It’s done. You were down. That would have been a kill bite.

So kill me or I’ll kill you.

Shota should have been grateful that Kodiak had spared his life. Instead, he rushed at his alpha.

He easily blocked the attack, pushing Shota backwards.

Let it go,thought Kodiak.

But Shota only stumbled, then turned around and launched himself at Kodiak.

Once more, he pushed him away.

Kodiak didn’t want to fight anymore. It was done. And he sent that message out before turning his back on the other wolf, and he walked out of the circle. Gasps rippled through the pack.

Shota barrelled into him from behind, shoving him. Outside the circle. Outside the sacred space. And he chomped down on Kodiak’s back. Pain tore at his muscles.

Have it your way, then. Kodiak wouldn’t die simply for giving Shota the chance to live.

Kodiak flipped over and snapped at Shota, once again easily biting down on the underside of Shota’s neck. His teeth made deep puncture wounds, deeper than before. To the bone. Then Kodiak pushed Shota down and tore at him with his claws.

He let him go, dropping the injured wolf in the dirt.

No one moved to help or speak up.

He didn’t make the mistake of changing back. There was something in Shota, something dark and unstoppable, and he refused to stay down.

Shota growled and got up, then he turned and snapped, missing Kodiak as he came in for him again and again.
