“Fine.” Onai said.

“The more information we have, the better equipped we are to fight them. And win.”

“And know what it is they’re up to.”

“We know, Ash,” said Skoll. “If the powers of this damn Blood Opal are real…”

“They are,” Kodiak said as he rubbed a hand over his head, “or they think those powers are real. So either way we look at it, things are dangerous.”

But the danger would be worse if the power was real, and as much as Kodiak hoped it wasn’t, he suspected it was.

The vampires were evil bloodsuckers. Not insane.

“We take it that the powers are real,” Kodiak said, “and we stick to my plan. Choose a vampire and follow them. Report in everything, no matter how insignificant it seems.”

“Shouldn’t we stay here and protect the clubhouse?” asked Channing. “You did kill a vampire nearby, right?”

He took a slow breath and somehow resisted clenching hand hands into fists. He needed to show his power, his cool, but fuck, it was hard when it came to this.

“They’re not after us or the clubhouse.”

“You know this how?” Skoll lifted his chin.

There were thousands of reasons. Many that made perfect sense, like the fact the vampires knew the vicinity of their clubhouse, just like they knew the vicinity of their lairs.

One of the perks–or was that downfalls–of being able to sense the other so profoundly.

“I know,” he said, “because they’re after Tamaska, and she’s not here.”

Silence descended sharply.

Channing’s eyes widened. “You brought her here?”

“I was going to do that. To keep her safe,” said Kodiak.

Under different circumstances, he’d be impressed with Channing’s analytical reasoning. But right then these weren’t the questions he needed. They got in the way, hindered. And…

And he didn’t know what the hell was happening with her.

“It doesn’t matter,” he said.

Onai glared. “It does. You brought a human here.”

“Not here, close. I wanted to keep her safe. We aren’t vampires. We protect her and her kind. End of story. And if I hadn’t been with her then—”

“What?” Skoll shook his head. “You’d have what?”

He had two ways to approach this. One, rip strips from Skoll for daring to question him like that, or he could be as honest as he could. Show true leadership.

“It’s not about what I would have done or not done. But the fact I was watching her, with her, meant we gained something vital. The vampire attack.”

“They happen.”

He sent Skoll a cool look.

“If I hadn’t been with her, then we wouldn’t know about the vampires’ ability to be out before sunset.”

“So—”
