Page 36 of Marked Wolf

His inner wolf shoved hard to escape once more, a warning. One he wasn’t about to ignore. He listened with his wolf ears and breathed in again, this time with the express purpose to pick up scents. And he got one.

Vampire.

They were being followed.

Kodiak reluctantly let go of Tamaska’s hand and spun around in time to see a vampire rushing towards him. This time, he remained in human form, not wanting to further distress Tamaska, and he needed to keep clothes on as long as he could.

But he was ready for this.

Even though Kodiak’s injury burned and pulled with pain, the vampire was no match for his skill. Kodiak killed it as Tamaska screamed behind him. He turned to see her backing away from another attacker.

Kodiak attacked the vampire, catching it off guard, and pummeled his fists into its head, stunning it. He wanted to finish it off, but her scream filled their air. “Stop!”

He turned and hurried to her. She wrapped her arms about him, burying her head in his chest. “Get me out of here.”

Kodiak wanted to keep her close, his arms protectively circling her, but he needed to get her safe. There was a limit to how many vampires he could fight off, and he was already injured. She’d done well to fight off Cory, after seeing the horrors between the wolves and vampires, but hanging around was folly.

He eased her back. “Quickly now, my car is just over there. Run!”

He didn’t have to tell her twice. She started running straight away, leaving him to catch up. Even when vulnerable, she had a strength he admired. The kind of strength a strong wolf looked for in a mate. She would be a worthy one, if only she wasn’t human.

She reached the car and was getting in by the time he caught up. He slid in and started it, letting the V8 engine roar before he depressed the gas pedal. The tires screeched as he made a tight U-turn and sped away, putting as much distance between them and the club as he could.

His stomach roiled. At least Tamaska was safe, albeit scared, confused, and needing an explanation of the supernatural world that existed alongside her kind.

And another problem ate away at his insides. Olcan wasn’t going to like whatever it was he did, and he’d just gone off on his own against the alpha’s wants. But that wasn’t the problem.

He’d killed vampires when he was the one who’d ordered his team not to.

At least, not unless it was in self-defense.

He could argue that, but it was tenuous at best. Because he’d gone into their domain.

It was an act of war.

That’s how it would be seen.

Fuck.

And the clubhouse, the place where he needed to go, where he should go, was now off limits.

He didn’t know if a young vampire like Cory would be taken at his word, or if the vampires would use what was clearly a shifter attack in their nightclub as the reason to fight. He didn’t know if he’d be implicated, even if he was on fucking camera.

None of that mattered in the short term.

The safety of his clan and the safety of Tamaska were what mattered.

If the vampires were after her, which they were, he couldn’t lead them to his family. And no way could he let her go it alone.

For now, it seemed, she was stuck with him, whether she liked it or not.

Her very life depended on it.

Tamaska

Tamaska glancedat Kodiak while he drove. His foot landed heavily on the accelerator, but his hands relaxed on the steering wheel, his eyes firmly on the road ahead, clear and focused. And calm. How was he so calm?
