She had rejected him for something that no one was to blame for.

They didn’t have a future.

What’s done is done. But for now, he’d take what he had. He enjoyed the softness and warmth of her body against his skin. It wasn’t as if he’d deliberately set out on a path that might lead him to fall in love with Tamaska or to make his wolf want to bond with her.

Torment welled inside him at the mere thought of not having the chance to be together with Tamaska as mates. If only she weren’t human. If only she didn’t hate shifters. The thought caught sharply in his mind, and he held his breath. Could he change her?

He ran a hand down her skin. No, he couldn’t change her. She was afraid of dogs, never mind wolves. Even if they could get past the hate, there was the fear. There was no way she could survive in a pack if he stayed, and no guarantee she could conquer it if they went their own way.

Kodiak closed his eyes for a moment, wishing things could be different between them. He should’ve taken more care, never given into the lust that burned hot within him whenever he looked at her. He’d never had a simple fuck turn into something more.

Since she was human, he never thought it possible to bond with her. But that was exactly what had started to happen. Now it would tear them both apart if they couldn’t be together as chosen mates.

But being together, that would cause damage too. He just didn’t know which was worse.

Then again, he might be jumping too far ahead. The threat of the vampires and the Blood Opal stood tall, a dark blight on everything. And he had no idea how bad that blight was.

Although, he had a horrible feeling it was very bad indeed.

He gazed at her.

Tamaska’s breath slowed as she slipped into a deep sleep, and he casually danced his fingers over her bare arm. The smoothness of her skin quietly fanned his desire for her, maintaining the blissful afterglow buzzing through him.

She stirred, and he lifted his head to see if she was still asleep. Her eyelids fluttered but remained closed, the peaceful expression on her face reassuring him all was well.

At least, as well as things could be under the circumstances.

Pushing aside the whole mess he’d found himself in with her, the other one loomed.

The vampires wanted her. And he didn’t know why.

What the fuck are the vampires up to?The thought crashed through his mind like a trainwreck. Even though there was peace lying there with Tamaska, the bond between them even stronger now, a restlessness took hold of Kodiak.

They wanted her. And it wasn’t about the simple, vile act of draining her, feeding on her. This was something more, something deeper, darker, and something, he suspected, that had to do with the fucking Blood Opal.

Agitation coursed through him as his wolf pushed to the surface, so intensely that he couldn’t ignore it. He wanted to run free, and he was in just the right place. That was the hut’s whole purpose, tucked away from the city in the cover of thick bushland.

And he’d promised his wolf this gift.

He hadn’t meant to come here yet, and usually when they wanted to run wild, he went deeper into the mountains.

But after everything, with all the thoughts swirling and pushing at him, how could he stop this?

He couldn’t. And he didn’t want to. He needed this like air.

Looking at Tamaska, he figured she was deep enough in her sleep that she wasn’t about to wake. And he’d set the alarms to keep her safe, sending a message back to the club house, and his phone to keep her safe.

Kodiak gave Tamaska a gentle kiss on her cheek. She snuggled deeper under the bedding, comforted by sleep.

He slipped from the bed, careful not to disturb her. His inner wolf pushed hard toward the surface, keen to be free.

Grabbing clothes, he set them by the door and slipped out, securing the building behind him.

Outside, the chill of the night air stung his bare skin, the last of the heat left over from their lovemaking unable to keep him warm. But that didn’t worry him. He’d heat soon enough.

He breathed in deep, bringing the eucalypt scent deep into his lungs, along with the freshness of the night air. Tamaska would be safe inside the hut with the security the pack had set up.

But he turned back and checked it, anyway.
