And that made him let her go.

For now.

He cursed under his breath. The situation had quickly taken a turn for the worse. Only hours ago, he’d been in her bed, her trust in him growing. Now, it was all shattered because of that fucking vampire.

Right about now he’d love to have a vampire in his clutches. One he could rip apart with his claws and teeth. And then he wanted to kill another. Kill all of them.

For making her look at him with betrayal in her eyes. For causing her pain by killing her friend. For wanting to take Tamaska, too.

Danger hung in the air. Like a living thing. All around him a low pulse he could feel if he opened to it.

Not danger to him.

Like he gave a shit about that. But Tamaska was in danger and that… He’d need to keep an eye on her. Protect her.

Whether she wanted it or not.

With a sigh he started to move again. The bushes thinned, and he paused near the trunk of an old white eucalyptus tree, his hand on its smooth bark. The connection kept him grounded. Stopped him doing that very stupid thing of going after her.

Hopefully she’d be smart and go home, but with the daylight she’d be safe enough, even if she went in to work or poked about. As long as she didn’t stumble into a lair of vampires.

What were the chances of that?

He tightened his hand as he forced himself to breathe slowly.

That look she gave him seared into him once more.

He growled, the rumble deep and loud, and thumped his fist into the tree.

In that moment when Tamaska turned, her eyes locking onto his, Kodiak’s breath had caught in his throat and his pulse skipped a beat because it had been like glimpsing her soul. And her his. A shockwave, he now admitted, had rocked him. Almost as if she saw him and his wolf side all at once. His animal side stirred with impatience.

It urged him to run, give into that instinct to go after her, take that risk.

But a good wolf—a great alpha, which he would be one day—didn’t give into impulse. He needed to consider the pack, the greater good.

That didn’t mean ignoring her or the need to keep her safe, but it meant being smart, seeing the bigger picture and finding the best path to serve all the best he could.

Right now that meant denying his wolf.

Denying his instinct to follow her.

Endangering the pack wasn’t the move of an alpha.

Just like putting a human in danger wasn’t.

But the daylight kept Tamaska safe. And taking off after her was nothing more than weakness, being a slave to base emotions.

Once he dealt with his pack, took the information he’d learned there, he could protect her when the darkness came, shadow her, and if it came down to it, claim her.

Anything to keep her safe. To prevent her from getting herself killed.

He’d do it all.

Changing back to wolf, he bounded through the scrub, letting his wolf blow off excess energy. His paws crushed the dry leaves as he moved, freedom flooding through him as he embraced his animal instincts.

Back at the clubhouse, he returned to his human form and strode in naked.

The place lay empty. Everyone, it seemed, was out doing what they needed—gathering intel about the Blood Opal and the vampires’ movements.
