“That you lost.”

“They planned to take it, probably had been for a long time, and—”

“I don’t want your excuses, Kodiak.” Olcan shook his head. “I want that fucking opal. I want the vampire threat neutralized and the human gone.”

Tamaska. No one needed to say her name.

But Olcan’s threat hung in the air.

And if he didn’t have the other pack members to think of, their fate in his hands, he’d walk.

Or would he?

For all the cries of being a lone wolf he wanted to bring in change, needed to protect.

And that meant his friends and Tamaska.

“I’ll have the Blood Opal for you at the big meeting,” Kodiak said.

Olcan laughed. “Tonight? You’ll have it tonight?”

He considered his alpha. The meanings and taunts packed into his words.

“Tonight? I can’t promise you tonight.”

“Then—”

“But I’ll have it for the ritual monthly meeting next week.”

The laughter died on the man’s lips. “That’s tantamount to a gauntlet.”

“I know what it is. And I’ll have the fucking opal.”

Or he’ll be gone. A wolf never promises something they can’t deliver at the ritual meeting. It’s more than a gauntlet. It’s a blood oath.

Slowly his alpha nodded. “Don’t know if that will be enough to save you.”

“If it’s not, then we’ll fight.”

Kodiak’s words hung in the air.

Fight at a ritual meeting meant for the title, and for someone like Olcan it just might mean to the death.

He was ready. He might not want to be, but Kodiak was.

If Olcan forced his hand, he’d go in and win.

But first, he needed to find that fucking, cursed opal, the thing that held power, that seemed to be the key to a war the vampires wanted.

He stared at Olcan, waiting for him to speak, waiting for him to move. When he didn’t, Kodiak made a gesture. “If you don’t mind. I have a job to do.”

“One you fucked up.”

“Think what you want, Olcan.” Kodiak moved then, pushing into Olcan as he had no other choice.

Olcan caught Kodiak by the arm and pulled him back. He met his alpha’s dark glare with a cold stare.

“You’ll be out of this pack because you can’t take orders from me,” said Olcan. “You better remember that.”
