It was a poor plan, but she didn’t like seeing the way her presence strained Kodiak’s relationship with his alpha. And all that talk of bonding was making her nervous.

They’d given into their lust for each other, but in such a short time, it had started to develop into something more permanent.

If she stayed, she’d bringing danger to these people, these beings. And she’d be compromising Kodiak’s place in his world.

He’d sacrifice everything for her.

She couldn’t allow him to make this mistake on her account.

She didn’t know much about wolf shifters, but she would have bet that he needed his pack more than he needed her.

“Let me make it easy for you, then. I’ll leave now.” Tamaska turned away from Kodiak. In time, she would get over him. What scared her most was how she would survive the vampires.

But she’d find a way.

Somehow.

21

Kodiak

Kodiak’s chest constricted tight. There was no way in hell he would let her leave. They’d been through too much for her to simply walk away from him.

And there were vampires hunting her, for crying out loud.

“Like fucking hell, you’re leaving,” Kodiak said, storming over and taking her arm.

“Hey.” Tamaska turned and glared at him while trying to twist out of his hold. “Let me go.”

“No. You’re staying.” Kodiak turned to meet his alpha’s eyes. “And I’m staying. We will deal with this vampire mess. Once that’s over, you’ll see that having her here with me will work.”

Olcan growled deeply, disdain clear in his eyes. “And what if it doesn’t?”

“It will.”

“If it doesn’t?”

“Then I stand by my earlier words. But it’s not going to come to that, Olcan.”

“But you can’t keep the wolf shifter line going by mating with her. It’s a waste of time if you can’t do that.”

“What? I mean, we’re not going to have kids,” Tamaska said.

The look of surprise and horror on her face turned Kodiak’s stomach sour. There was so much she needed to learn about life in the pack. He didn’t want her to find out the details like this, not while they were arguing. Details that sounded, the way they were stated here, like she was nothing but second class, chattel, when it wasn’t like that.

“We don’t need to talk about this now,” said Kodiak.

Shota shrugged. “She needs to know what she’s getting into.”

There was so much more he wanted to say. Needed to say. But this wasn’t the time, and he couldn’t shake the feeling he was being tested somehow.

Apart from that, the whole bottle Olcan was shaking and Shota was opening, wasn’t exactly something to discuss quickly, and as he said, it wasn’t the time. They had more important things to deal with.

But he waited because like it or not, Olcan was still the alpha, and he was still the beta, and this had to be resolved on some level before they could move on and deal. And it needed to be resolved fast.

“She doesn’t want your half-breeds. And I—”

“Shut up, Shota.” Olcan kept his dark stare firmly on Kodiak. “You’re my beta. You have duties to your pack which go beyond providing protection.”
