Coming to a stop in front of Shota, he stared down at the younger wolf, holding his gaze. Normally he wouldn’t play the macho game here, but if they were to have all hands on deck and everyone in their place to make this happen right, then Shota needed to understand he wasn’t beta.

Last thing anyone needed was Shota trying to make a play or defying him at the wrong moment.

Shota lowered his eyes after a brief glare of defiance. “Right away.”

“Especially my team. I want them there now, before anyone else.”

“I’ll inform them first.”

“Good.”

Shota didn’t waste any time in leaving the room.

Kodiak let the walls in his mind weaken to allow the pack’s thoughts in. He could sense Shota reaching out to the others with his summons. Kodiak wasn’t going to have much time alone with Tamaska before they would need to make their way to the meeting room at the back of the house.

He reached out to her. Though her chin trembled a little and shadows haunted her eyes, she raised her chin with defiance and squared her shoulders.

“So, what do you need me to do?” she asked.

He touched her cheek. “You’re amazing, the most amazing woman I’ve met. All this and you want to help.”

“I don’t have an interest in dying or worse.” A small shudder passed through her. “Of course I’m here.”

“Fair enough.” He smiled. “I’m glad you’re staying, though.”

“I’m still not sure if….” She glanced away, blinking rapidly.

He pushed her hair behind her ear, deliberately brushing the tips of his fingers over her cheek. How he wished things could have been different between them. If only they’d met in more peaceful times. If only she’d been born a wolf, not a human.

Kodiak leaned in and brushed his mouth against hers. Her small moan was fuel to his senses, and he did it again and again until the kiss hardened, lips parted, and their tongues danced.

If he could, he’d take her now. Fuck her hard from behind, hand on her throat, biting down and making his claim.

If he could, if he had the time, he’d seduce her slow and sweet until she was liquid need in his hands.

She tasted of fear and strength, of lust and sweetness and sex. She tasted like nothing on earth, and he couldn’t get enough.

Reluctantly, he ended the kiss, pulling away before he lost his tenuous control and did something he shouldn’t.

That kiss had to be enough. She sighed, her tongue slipping over her lips as if tasting him.

Kodiak ran his hands down her arms, wanting to reassure her. But how could he, especially considering that the pack hadn’t fully accepted her?

They would. He needed to believe that. They’d accept her; how could they not.

And if they didn’t?

He’d walk. With her.

“Tamaska, I don’t want you to worry about the pack hurting you.”

There was so much more he wanted to say, like they’d make this happen, they’d get the pack to accept her, that the two of them would find a way, no matter how short the time had been from meeting each other until now.

He wanted to make all kinds of promises.

He didn’t. “They’re protective and gruff, but they’re good.”

“Okay.” She nodded, but didn’t quite meet his gaze.
