“Did you just leave the office?” he asks.

“I’ve had enough for one day. Everyone is pissing me off.”

“I figured as much. No other reason you’d leave Orion before five o’clock.”

“If you suspected, then why are you calling me?”

“Just an update. We have four more Ivanov bodies,” he informs me. “One was in pretty bad shape. The idiot must have put up a fight.”

“Still no Petyr?”

“Nope. Maybe this is part of the Babai’s process?”

“Or maybe they’re not all they’re cracked up to be,” I say through gritted teeth. “Call me if there’s any other information. I’m going to be at home for the rest of the night.”

“Got it. Say hi to Paige for me.”

Just the mention of her name is enough to calm the anxious energy inside of me. She’s the main reason I left the office.

I needed to see her.

But when I walk into our bedroom, she’s at her desk and surrounded by paperwork. This is one of those rare times when I wish she would consent to being a kept woman and save the work for me.

I walk up behind her and place my hands on the back of her chair. “Hello, kiska.”

She jumps a foot in fright, obviously having missed my entrance. “Misha! You’re home early.”

“I thought I’d come home and surprise you.”

She wraps her arms around my neck and kisses me tenderly on the lips. “It’s a great surprise. The only thing is, I have some more work to finish up. Probably about an hour’s worth.” I groan and she pats my back and laughs. “The crib arrived this morning. Maybe you could set it up while I finish here?”

“If I were more cynical, I’d almost think you were trying to get rid of me,” I drawl.

“Just for the next hour,” she says with a cheeky little wink. “Pinky promise.”

I slap her ass as she turns back to her work. It’s frustrating as hell because all I want to do is bend her over that desk and fuck her senseless. But watching her work is a turn-on, too. A catch-22 designed by the devil himself.

It leaves me horny and irritated. Not the best condition to be in after a futile day at the office. I take my irritation into the next room to unleash it on the crib.

Instead of finding the silence I’m craving, though, I walk in on my mother and sister. They’re perched at the window seat overlooking the backyard.

“My wayward brother! What a surprise,” Niki greets.

“You sound happier to see me than my wife did just now.”

Niki snorts with laughter. “She kicked you out while she finishes working, huh? I love it.”

“That makes one of us.”

She cackles happily. “No other woman has ever refused you. I love that she’s prioritizing her work instead of dropping her panties the moment you get home.”

“Really, Niki,” Mom says, sounding horrified. “Must you be so crass?”

She smiles and lifts her chin. “Apparently, I must.”

“Why are you so damn happy?” I ask.

“I moved into my new place yesterday.”
