He almost smiles before he kills it at the last second. “No. I just decided to trust you.”

“Hey, I picked those paint samples you asked for,” Nikita practically yells, waving the options in my face.

I glance up at the staircase with a wince. “Fucking hell, will you lower your voice?”

She shrugs, unapologetic. “Paige is still in bed. She doesn’t eat breakfast until at least nine o’clock. That’s when her nausea subsides. As her husband, you should know that.”

As Paige’s husband, there are lots of things I should know that I don’t. Nikita doesn’t need to be rubbing that in my face, though.

“Unless you’re not sleeping in the same room as her…?” she continues. “Are you still sleeping in your office?”

“I have a lot of work to do.”

She rolls her eyes. “You’re pathetic.”

“Why are you here?” I try to coax her towards the front door, but she dodges me and scampers further within.

“Because you asked me to do you a favor, remember?”

“Only because I thought you’d be less annoying about it than Mother or Cyrille. Turns out I was wrong.”

She doesn’t seem in the least bit offended by that. “Personally, I like the green. But the—”

I pluck the samples out of her hand and flip through them one by one. When I look up, I realize that Niki is smiling at me.

“What?”

She shakes her head. “Nothing. It’s just that you can still surprise me sometimes.”

I roll my eyes at her. “Spare me. I’ve got shit to do.”

“Any of that ‘shit’ involve preparing for the big date tonight?”

“She told you?” I groan.

Nikita looks far too smug about it for my liking. “Obviously. We’re besties now.”

“There was a time when you weren’t sure of Paige. Remember that? Wasn’t it nice?”

Nikita shrugs it off. “I was just protective of you. I wasn’t sure of Paige’s intentions. But I’ve since come to realize that Paige is far too good for you. Now,you’rethe one I’m not sure about.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence.”

“Please—you don’t need anyone else to boost your ego. What you need is someone to keep you humble,” she says, dancing towards the staircase.

“What is with you today?” I ask. “You seem to be in a suspiciously good mood.”

She laughs. “Turns out having a whole mansion to myself feels pretty good. With Mom living here now, I’m the woman of the house. It’s a nice change of pace.”

“You know that Mother is not living here permanently right? This is temporary. Just until the babies are born.”

“Yeah, you wish,” she snorts. “Once those babies are born, you’llneverget rid of her.”

“Don’t joke about that.”
