Benjamin gave me hope. I can feel its absence before I even step into his room.

The sound machine is still humming. The curtains are still drawn. So much is the same, but the air feels stale.

His crib is empty. The indent of his body is still warm.

Akim steps into the doorway, his shadow casting across the room. I grip the edge of the crib with white knuckles.

“Find Piper,” I say without looking.

“Will she know where he is?” Akim asks.

Betrayal scorches through me, burning away my newly-softened edges. What remains is vengeance, tempered and sharp. Along with the ache to wield it.

“She’ll know,” I growl. “Piper will know exactly where Benjamin is. Because she is the one who took him.”
