She wants to get straight into this? Fine. We’ll get straight into it. She seems strong enough to handle going toe-to-toe with me.

“Tell me the truth.”

She lifts her hand from her side. For a second, it flutters awkwardly in front of her stomach almost like a metal detector wand. Then her hand claps back to her side and remains glued to her thigh. “About what?”

A nurse rattles down the hallway with a talkative patient who is complaining about getting three cups of orange yogurt and no red. I kick the door closed with the bottom of my foot.

“I thought we were done playing games. You know what I want to know, Piper.”

“I already told you I don’t know where Benjamin is. If I did, I would have mentioned it before I passed out in a hot closet.”

I arch a brow. “Is that what we’re calling it now? A ‘hot closet?’ Did theheatmake you pass out?”

Her face flushes. It reminds me how she gasped and panted and arched her back as she rode my fingers, her face flushed the same way.

Blyat’,I need to focus. I’m supposed to have the upper hand right now. Instead, I’m getting hard just by remembering what my hand did only a few hours ago.

“You can’t keep me here.”

“I can do whatever I want.”Whoever I want.AndI wantright now. Fucking hell, there’s so much I want.

“Okay, then why not leave me in that closet? What’s the point of bringing me here to make sure I’m all patched up?”

“You’re no use to me dead.”

“Someone sounds just like dear old Dad,” she says bitterly. “People are only as good as their usefulness to you.”

Even the suggestion of Sergey is enough for me to see red. If Piper realized how close she was to the edge of my patience, she’d back off. “When it comes to my enemies, yes.”

“Am I your enemy?”

“Refuse to cooperate and you’ll have your answer,” I growl.

She shakes her head. “You care too much about your reputation. That’s why we pretended to date in the first place. If I turn up dead, all signs will point back to you.”

“I pretended to date you so you’d help me keep my son. Now that you’ve done the exact opposite of that, I couldn't care less about my ‘reputation.’”

Piper looks deep into my eyes and sees how serious I am. Her jaw works side to side as she thinks. “But then you won’t ever get Benjamin back.”

Blood is thrumming in my ears. I move to the center of the room, chest tense with anger. “That better not be a fucking threat.”

She frowns in confusion. “Oh—No. No, I didn’t mean—I don’t know where Benjamin is.”

I meet her eyes, staring into their emerald depths for a long moment. Finally, I manage to look away. “You’re a better liar than I thought.”

“I’m not lying!” she cries out. “I didn’t mean that I would keep Benjamin away from you. I’m just saying, if you start running around town kidnapping women and killing people, you’re going to get caught. You can’t raise a baby in prison.”

“Oh, so you’re just worried about me then.” I sigh in disbelief. “Yeah, that’s believable. And I’m not a don; I’m a philanthropist. All I want is to make the world a better place.”

“Is that what you were doing when you killed Rodion? ‘Making the world a better place’?” The abrupt change of subject stops me short. My brows pinch together, and Piper rolls her eyes. “Sure, right. You kill so many people you’ve already forgotten who Rodion is. I get it. But be serious. Did you kill him because you found out he is the one who killed Emily?”

She doesn’t know.

She actually doesn’t know.

Plotting behind the scenes apparently doesn’t give you the benefit of grade A information. Because Piper is miles behind the plot. She has no clue Sergey killed Emily and Rodion. I, for one, have no intention of filling her in. The more dangerous she thinks I am, the more likely she is to tell me what I want to know.

I stare at her, and the longer I stare, the more uncomfortable she becomes. Piper shifts from foot to foot. Then her fingers twitch on her thighs. Finally, her hand lifts again in the same way it did before. But then she slaps her hand back down.
