Which one am I?

“Piper.” I grab her hand and tug it away from her face. “Look at me.”

She shakes her head. “No.”

I pull her hands away and force her face up to mine. Tears streak down her cheeks. Her lower lip trembles as she meets my eyes.

“I feel guilty, too.”

Whatever she was expecting me to say, it wasn’t that. “What?”

“I feel guilty that I didn’t protect Benjamin. I feel guilty that I didn’t believe you. I feel guilty that I couldn’t save Emily.” I sigh. “But you have nothing to feel guilty for. You haven’t done anything wrong.”

“You’re just saying that.”

I brush her tears away with my thumbs. “I wouldn’t lie to you, Piper. Maybe once upon a time, I would have. But not anymore.”

She studies me for a moment. There’s a shift in her posture. She arches into me slightly and her hands grip my arms. “Timofey… tell me a secret.”

I think for a moment, screwing up my face in concentration until she giggles. Then I slide my finger over her full bottom lip and lean in close, whispering, “I’m about to give you the best birthday you’ve ever had.”

Then I scoop her into my arms and carry her, laughing, to the bed.

TIMOFEY

The sheets are still tangled from last night. It’s strange to think the two of us were just here less than twelve hours ago. Especially because this time feels so much different.

Everything has changed.

Piper picks up on the strangeness, too. When I lay her on the bed, she stretches a hand out over the mattress. “No one made the bed.”

“I don’t like maids in my space.”

She smiles and her nose wrinkles. “You have maids at your house.”

I lay down next to her and scoop her closer to me. “Yeah, but I trust those maids.”

She places her palm on my chest and spreads her fingers wide. Her eyes are fixed there, like she’s studying the size of it compared to me. “It’s hard to earn your trust.”

“And easy to lose.”

Green eyes flick up to my face. “I’m sorry. I… I shouldn’t have left that day. After I found out about my dad and the money, I mean. I should have—”

I lean forward and press my lips to hers. She goes still for a moment, the words still trying to escape. Then she gives into the kiss.

There will be a time later for all of that. Right now, I have other plans.

Her hand on my chest kneads and then fists in the material of my shirt. With a sudden burst of strength, Piper pulls me towards her. I let her move me, but I’m careful to give her space.

“You can relax.” She tugs on my hips, forcing our lower bodies together so my erection is straining against my pants. Being so close to her always has that effect. “I like your weight on me. I’ve missed it.”

“I’ll crush you.”

Piper takes a bite out of my neck and then whispers in my ear, “Then crush me, Timofey.”

I claim her mouth again and curl my fingers in her hair. Her lithe body writhes under me, seeking and taking. She slides her hands under my shirt and plays my ribs with her fingers. Her hips rise up to meet me again and again.
