When he releases it, he licks my lips. “I will when you do.”

They settle as we approach the gate, the lights shining into the forest. “Showtime, boys.”

“If it all goes wrong, we’ll just shoot them,” Jonas adds helpfully. “God, I hope it goes wrong.”

Yep, insane, the lot of them, and I might just be the worst because I agree as I tug my gun out.

FIFTY-EIGHT

When we pull up to the gate, we slow down and try to look as relaxed as possible, even though we are all stiff with tension. A bored-looking guard heads over, shining his torch in the truck, but he doesn’t seem to recognise us or care. “What was it?”

“Some brush caught fire, but we put it out. Nothing to worry about,” Louis murmurs.

“Okay, head back. It’s time to switch shifts anyway.” The guard barely contains his yawn as he waves us in and the gate buzzes. He either didn’t care or was dumb or both, but it works in our favour.

Having studied the layout of the base, Louis drives slowly towards the hangar that’s farthest from the rest of the compound. We all step out of the truck and into the darkness to gather our thoughts. Jonas grabs some explosives and places a few around the truck, and then we head to the building that we’ve seen the most activity at.

We slowly march through the darkened base, placing explosives in a few places so we can set them off when we need to.

The car charges will go first, causing a distraction to get us into the buildings, and the others are in case everything goes wrong.

We’ll blow this place sky high—an agreement we all made.

We manoeuvre into place down the side of the huge, two-story brick building with two guards posted outside. D works his magic, and when he nods, I know he has control of the power and cameras, which is just what we need.

Jonas lifts the handheld detonator, and with a mouthed, “Boom,” he flips it. The car we were in explodes into a fiery ball, lighting up the sky. Alarms immediately blare as soldiers rush to the car from every corner—except for the two at the door. Nico nods and moves around the building to the other side, and when I peek out, we slip out in sync. I drive my knife into a man’s chest, pushing him to the wall and covering his mouth as D kills the lights and cameras. Nico does the same, and with a matching grunt, we tug the bodies behind the building and into the darkness.

They will eventually be found, but it gives us time to get in first, especially since the alarm still shrieks, drawing everyone on the base to the burning truck.

“Let’s move; the clock is ticking. We go in low and use the element of surprise. D, I want those cameras off inside as quickly as possible, and you are in charge. Nico and Jonas, you are the battering ram. Isaac, stay in the back with D. Nova, you’re with me.” We all nod, and when we step in front of the doors, Jonas pulls the pin on something and tosses it inside before slamming the doors.

There’s a flash and some groaning, and then he opens the doors and we peer through the smoke to see disoriented soldiers as Nico and Jonas rush in, knocking them out as they go.

I follow them in, wincing at the smoke, but we push through into an entryway where soldiers are scrambling about. I don’t hesitate to kill them because if they are here, then they know what’s being done.

They know, and they helped hurt their own.

And children.

It’s what keeps me going as we move as a unit, never faltering.

The element of surprise works for us. D blocks the door after us so no one can get in or escape, we find a security office where we quickly dispatch the guards, and Dimitri sets up shop. Isaac stays with him as we keep moving.

The building is a maze, but D quickly barks instructions in our ears after locating us through the cameras and taking them over so no one else can see us. “There are four giant labs on the second level. First level is living and relaxation. Third level does not have as many cameras but seems to be an office of some sort, and there’s motion inside.”

“We take the labs and keep as many subjects alive as we can, and whoever is here? Let’s hope he’s in charge,” Louis murmurs, and we all agree.

We form a square as we move through the first floor, which includes reception areas, kitchens, lounges, and even some bedrooms.

We engage with more guards, but they are either unprepared or just not fast enough. Others are highly trained soldiers, and I can appreciate their sharp eyes and quick movements, but they are not quick enough for us.

I watch the moment of shock on their faces when they realise what we are before we end their lives.

It’s almost too easy.

We sweep room after room, leaving bodies in our wake, but they hear us coming now and they are prepared. At the back of the first floor, they have created a barricade of tables and chairs, the tops of their heads just peeking above them when they start to spray fire across the hallway. I roll to the side and into the open doorway of a room, yanking Isaac with me as he groans. Pushing him against the wall, I scan him for injury. He’s focused on the others who are all ducked into side rooms, but my focus is on him when I see he’s bleeding just above his pants. Ripping up his shirt, I find a single bullet wound.

Glancing down, he blinks in surprise. “Oh, I didn’t even feel it. I’ll be okay. It will heal.” He peers over his back. “It looks to be a through and through, so just leave the shirt to tighten on it and collect the blood. Nova?” He peers down at me worriedly as I stare at the blood dripping from the wound on my love.
