“Because you’re interested now, and you hate what he did as much as we do.” With that, Louis rolls up the window and pulls away.

I turn to watch out of the window, and a few seconds later, Nova turns on her engine and follows us out into traffic, making me smile. This may be business, and we may have his twisted experiments to end, but it doesn’t mean I’m not enjoying our latest group member.

She’s an improvement on these grumpy bastards, that’s for sure.

I’ll workveryclosely with her.

The drive takes over an hour and a half, the base set up as close to the old mansion as we dared without tipping them off—not that we had much choice. It was a military decision, the government’s secret operation location. It’s hidden, so if you don’t know where to look, you would think nothing of it.

I can almost sense Nova’s hesitation as we lead her through winding country lanes, with rolling hills on either side of us. There is no one for miles. I wonder if she thinks it’s a trap. Probably, but the girl is fearless. She doesn’t turn back, and when we pull into an old, abandoned barn to park, she follows us in before turning the bike off and walking over to meet us.

Her first question makes me laugh. She isn’t concerned for herself but her bike. “Will it be okay here?”

“Yes, there are cameras and a fence, though you wouldn’t see it, not to mention the sensors. This barn might look rundown, but it’s maintained and made to look this way,” Louis explains calmly before jerking his head at her. “Come, you can meet the people we work for. They are funding this operation.”

“Yeah, real cheerful bastards.” I laugh, walking backward to keep her in my line of sight. Nico rolls his eyes and trips me. I leap to my feet and swing, but Isaac gets between us, as always. Dimitri mutters something and rushes to catch up with Louis, probably antsy to get back to his computers and whatever shit he was doing on them.

Nico circles until he’s behind her—a habit. I see her shoulders tense, but she doesn’t protest, even as her eyes scan everything. She’s probably spotting all the hidden cameras in the trees as we move through the scrapyard. It’s a trap, of course. The cars and bits of metal are rigged with bombs, sensors, and even landmines. I did it myself.

You can never be too careful, and their security was almost laughable. Dimitri said even a child could hack it. They didn’t like that, but they grudgingly took our help.

Nova stops abruptly, her eyes narrowing. “Let me guess—C4 hidden in the cars, cameras in the trees, and sensors all over the place.”

That’s so hot, I almost groan. “You forgot the mines.”

“Of course.” She nods and moves over to me, meeting my eyes confidently as my cock jerks. “I would have added a few hidden weapon caches and bail out bags.” She strides past me, and I reach down to rearrange myself.

“I love her already,” I mumble, and Nico glares at me, so I turn and follow her, my eyes locked on her ass.

Across the next hill is a sharp incline, which is easy for us. We cover the ground in under a minute, as does Nova, who effortlessly keeps up, but for some soldiers this is a struggle—pussies.

When we reach the top, she looks around. “There’s nothing here,” she snaps. “If this is a trap . . .” She draws her gun and points it at Louis.

He holds his hands up and nods at Dimitri. “Do it.”

Concerned and looking for a way to disarm her, Dimitri moves over to the sensor. I move to her left, just in case she attacks, and Nico steps to her right. Isaac just sighs.

There’s a buzz, and Nova’s eyes narrow, but she doesn’t move until the grass-covered panel in the ground parts in the middle and rolls back. She turns, dropping her gun to her side, and watches as it reveals a yawning abyss. I move closer, and she spins, aiming her gun at my head.

“Stop getting so fucking close, chuckles,” she warns. “What is this place?”

“A hidden bunker. Our new employers are almost as paranoid as Dr Davis,” Dimitri replies. “It’s safe.”

“Nothing’s safe,” she mutters, but she puts her gun away and moves towards the other guys. When the platform arrives, she steps onto it and turns to us. “Well, come on then. What are we waiting for?”

Even Nico grins as we all hurry on, surrounding her, and then Dimitri presses the button, causing the platform to descend slowly. The lower we go, the darker it gets, with only emergency lowlights embedded in the dark-grey metal walls. The circular chamber stretches deep into the earth, with the bunker built below, althoughbunkermay not be the best word. The level numbers whizz by as Nova parts her legs, steadying herself. We finally slow and come to a soft stop before a ramp leading to the closed, bombproof bunker doors.

Stepping off the platform, I gesture at them as I wink at her. “Well, come on then, Nova, time to save the world.”

The doors open, and a few soldiers nod at us. They don’t like us, but they appreciate that we are here to help. They almost blend in with the walls in their black fatigues, and Nova pays them no mind as we lead her deeper into the labyrinth. The first room is a quarantine, questioning, and security room. After passing more doors and taking another elevator, we stop at the command room, which fills the whole second floor.

Louis nods at me, silently telling me what to do, then he looks at Nova, needing to speak to her since she hasn’t been with us long. “Isaac will escort you. You will be given a chip to get in and out of the area and any rooms. Everything is open to us, but without it, you will be locked out. I’m going to debrief while you do that. When you are done, they will escort you back here to meet the people behind everything.” Without waiting for her to respond, he merges into the hustle and bustle of the command floor.

There are about twenty computers all facing the wall of screens in the back, showing video feeds of active missions and other stuff. More soldiers are positioned at each, along with scientists. The generals are gathered in a glass conference room overlooking the entire floor, and that’s where Louis heads with Nico following behind, ready to protect him. Dimitri and Jonas come with me, but they will undoubtedly split off to go train. Jonas is always on the move. When he’s not fighting or training, he is cleaning and assembling his weapons.

I analysed his mental state when he was first brought in. I was more suitable than any of their medical staff to assess him after living as he did. Unlike myself, who compartmentalises everything that happened and looks at it logically, Jonas lets his anger control him, very much like Nico. Where Nico is scarred from his past, however, Jonas is fuelled by it. It means he’s always moving, fighting, flirting, or fucking. He needs to move or he will think on it.
