I quickly turn back to the computer as I breathe deeply and pretend to analyse my notes.

“Louis is ready. Are we good to go?” he calls.

“Go?” I jerk my head up like I was consumed by work and not the woman next to me. I am no better than Dr. Davis at this moment, almost using her weakness to take what isn’t mine. I close my eyes as hatred for myself builds. “Yes, of course. I need to stay and look at these results.”

“Okay . . .” He frowns, sounding confused. “I’ll escort Nova then.”

“Yes, do that.” I turn away quickly so he doesn’t see the strong emotions in my eyes. I feel her looking back at me before she follows him out without a word. Unable to resist, I lift my head and watch her go.

With each step she takes, my heart slams, begging me to chase her and finish that kiss.

What is happening to me?

Was he right about the reason I was supposed to be terminated? Lowering my head, I press it against the screen to cool my overheated skin and try to ignore my body’s urges. I will not become the creature he told me I would be, not even because of her.

And I have to work with her.

Fuck.

Ifollow Dimitri quietly, and he doesn’t break the silence either. He seems nervous about my presence, flicking his fingers against his leg as we rise in the elevator. All the while, my mind goes back to what almost happened, what I almost did.

I almost kissed the doctor.

What a fucking idiot. He was obviously embarrassed after. He was only trying to be polite and professional, and I cried, raged, tried to shoot him, and then almost kissed him.

I’m a mess.

Poor man, no wonder he didn’t want to come with us.

Feeling the need to fill the silence and escape my self-destructive thoughts, I glance at Dimitri. “Where’s Jonas?”

“Stabbing stuff,” he mutters, eyeing me before looking away. “I’m sorry. Next time, I will let them know you would prefer for him to escort you.”

With that, he steps out of the doors when they open, and I tip my head back and groan. I’m so rusty at conversation and being around other people, I’m fucking this up. Great. Just great. Even though I know they don’t have to like me, for some reason, it feels important, especially if what they say is true, because it means they are the only other ones in this world who knows what it’s like to grow up the way I did.

I’m pushing them away by almost kissing and attacking them.

I’m surprised I wasn’t terminated like the other kids, since it’s clear I’m not as capable as these men here who have adapted to this world. Not only that, but they are actively using the training and strength my father gave us to make the world a better place while I just ran and hid.

Sighing, I follow Dimitri as he leads me through what they called the command floor. I analyse the huge screens that cover the back wall, showing this base as well as my old house. Scientists and soldiers are working everywhere, but Dimitri heads right to a set of metal stairs on the left that lead up to a glass room overlooking it all.

He opens the door without knocking and steps inside, holding it for me without looking at me. Great.

Inside, there is a giant rectangular table, a fridge, and a kettle on the counter at the back. The dark-wood table is surrounded by chairs, only two of which are in use. Louis sits in one, and in the other is a man in full military dress, with grey hair and sharp, cold blue eyes. It’s clear he’s a commander of some sort.

Just who are these people?

“Please sit, Nova,” Louis offers, sounding friendly enough. I step inside, and Dimitri shuts the door harder than necessary, leaving me with them.

Before Louis is some water, and the other man has a mug. “A drink?” Louis asks as he stands.

“I don’t suppose you have whiskey,” I joke before sitting, automatically propping my heels on the table, but the commander glares at me, so I slowly put them down and cross my arms. “Water will be fine, thank you.” I remember my manners, even though they irritate me, and Louis moves around as I glare at the military man. I refuse to be intimidated. He eventually looks away, and I want to whoop in pleasure, but I refrain and smirk instead.

Louis places a glass of water before me and sits. “Nova, this is General Smith.”

“Of course it is,” I mutter, making his eyes narrow further until he’s basically just squinting. “I’ve been poked and prodded, and I followed you into a hole in the ground, so tell me everything now,” I demand.
