Great.

TEN

Ifeel Nova’s eyes on me as I guide her back to the elevator, but I don’t look at her. The first time I saw her, I was struck like an electric charge from a machine, and she restarted my cold heart. I don’t know why. It’s not because she’s beautiful, she is, but it was something in her eyes, in her determination to survive.

She is broken, just like me, but she is also able to function.

It makes my fingers twitch to figure her out, to peel back her exterior like I would a machine and fiddle. Even now, I tap my fingers to resist touching her.

Once the elevator stops, I rush out, trying to escape her presence and her sweet scent, but then her voice splits the air, making me stumble. The soft, purring tone heads directly to my cock in a way it shouldn’t, hardening it uncomfortably so.

“Look, I didn’t mean it to come out the way it did earlier, okay?” she says, and I turn back to see her looking at me. “I don’t prefer Jonas or any of you. I barely know you. I was just curious about this place and a little nervous. I want to talk and fill the silence. I’m sorry if that upset you.”

Fuck, of course she didn’t mean it that way. I don’t even know why it’s been bothering me that she asked for him, as if I weren’t good enough. Like she said, she doesn’t know us, so why did it hurt? Why do I wish she said my name? She’s looking at me kindly now, not him. It doesn’t make sense. Computers, cameras, and equipment make sense, but people? Not so much.

I don’t even understand my own turbulent feelings regarding the beautiful woman waiting for a response, so I put those thoughts away to answer her.

“I understand.”

She nods but seems to be waiting for more. “You’re not a talker, are you?” she teases, grinning.

“I’m better at fixing things,” I admit as she comes to my side, and we start walking again.

“Fair enough. So where did my dear old daddy keep you?” I flinch, and she winks at me.

“Prague,” I mutter. “It was a nice city from what I saw of it.”

“Exotic. I simply got a basement.”

I can’t help but smile. “I had no windows.”

“Windows?” She gasps. “What a luxury! I had no bed, just a floor to sleep on.”

“At least you had somewhere to lie down. I had to stand.” I find myself teasing her, and we are both smiling. It’s only then when I realise she put me at ease. How strange. No one, not even the others, can do that, and I’ve been with them for years.

“Come on, this way to the rooms. They aren’t big or even comfy, but they are private, and there’s a bed and pillows.”

“God damn, you run a five-star hotel,” she teases, walking next to me with strong strides.

“Wait until you see the food,” I joke as we reach the room between Louis’s and Isaac’s. I open the metal door and let her enter first. There’s a metal single bed to the left with the bedding folded at the end and a towel. A door to the left leads to a small en suite, with the wall caging in the bed. Each wall is made of metal, and there are no windows, just a bright white light above, a small desk to the right, and a wardrobe.

“Wow, there’s so much room,” she teases, sitting on the hard bed. “You guys really know how to spoil a girl.”

“We do.” I grin. “Your RFID chip will let you in and out. Try to get some sleep. I’ll get some water and supplies delivered.” I turn to leave, and she calls out.

“Dimitri?”

“Yeah?” I ask, looking back.

“Thank you,” she offers softly, appearing happy.

“You’re welcome, Nova.” I shut the door after me, a smile on my lips as I turn to leave.

Maybe people aren’t as bad as they seem.
