NINETEEN

Once up top, we split up. Our cars are hidden in the old barn. I don’t know where the soldiers go, but when we emerge onto the empty country road, they are waiting in two black SUVs. It alerts me to the fact they have a hidden cache somewhere they haven’t told us about. I narrow my eyes at that, making a mental reminder to find it when we get back.

Even if it’s just to play with their toys.

I knew the general lied when he said he had no nukes.

“Why do you look like you just hatched an evil plan?” Nova grumbles, scooting away from me. She’s pressed between Nico and me, so I move over again, ignoring the empty space between me and the door, much preferring to have her plastered against me.

Nico sighs and presses against the door uncomfortably. I see his old ghosts rearing up, but when Nova looks at him and smiles, his eyes warm. His entire focus is on her now, and not the cramped situation.

In all honesty, we were all surprised that he volunteered to sit back here. He never does, always preferring to sit up front, and we never questioned it because we understand triggers better than anyone. He hopped right in today, however, and when he met our eyes, he said not to question it.

I see Louis in the driver’s seat, throwing him worried glances and me harrowing ones, so I move back slightly, very slightly, to give them more room.

“Nico, Jonas is going to do bad things. If he gets his cock out, do I have permission to cut it off?”

“Why? You liked looking at it last time.” I grin, reaching out to play with her hair. She smacks my hand away and rolls her eyes while the others gawk at my statement.

I let them think what they want, sitting back with a smug smile.

“If he gets it out, I’ll cut it off for you.” Nico grins at her, and they share a secret look that has my eyebrow rising. I meet Dimitri’s eyes in the front passenger seat before he turns away, but I saw his envy. Interesting.

Isaac sighs in the back. “Please don’t. That would be a lot of blood, and I’m wearing my nice jacket.”

“Did doc just make a joke? Holy shit,” I tease, looking back at him. His eyes are locked on a screen, and he flips me off without looking, making me chuckle as I lean into Nova.

“It seems you have them all on their best behaviour, trying to show off for you, Nova,” I purr.

She shivers, but when she turns to me, her eyes narrow in fake anger. Under it, however, I see lust. She can’t hide it from me for long. Oh no, Nova wants me just as much as I want her. “Or maybe they just aren’t assholes like you, Jo.”

“Oh, Jo! Are you giving me nicknames now? That’s fine with me, baby, though I would prefer Big Coc—”

“Enough,” Louis snaps from the driver’s seat. “Don’t make me come back there.”

“Nice going, Nova. Way to get me in trouble,” I tease with a wink, waiting for the hit to come from Isaac when Louis gives himthelook, but instead, Nova reaches out and smacks the back of my head.

“Behave, and I’ll let you show me your collection of toys.”

I almost choke, and then she closes her eyes slowly. “I meant like weapons—”

“Can’t take it back!” I shout, leaning in and wiggling my eyebrows. “I have this really long vibrating—”

This time, it’s Isaac who hits me, but I see Nova chuckling softly, so it’s worth the momentary pain.

“We know the location of the estate. We will be there in just over two hours,” Louis informs us, the mood in the car sobering at the reminder of why we are here. I feel Nova stiffen, and before I can make a joke to help, Nico reaches out and covers her fisted hand on her thigh, offering her support.

It helps, and she leans into him, placing her head on his shoulder. I feel his shock ripple through the car, and ours also—both at him reaching out for her and for him touching another person voluntarily.

Nova is changing things, but is it for the best?

I end up napping out of boredom, and when I wake up, I’m curled around a grumpy Nova who pushes me away with a knife to my throat. Her and Nico are playing some weird game in Latin, Isaac is working, and Dimitri is playing with a machine while Louis drives.

“How much longer?” I whine.

“Ten minutes,” Louis barks, cranking up the radio to ignore me.
