“You are. You just don’t know it.”

“Will you tell me about him? Bass?” I ask, changing the subject. I want to know more about the man who could have been a friend, who went through what we did.

“Dimitri knew him best, but he had this laugh that would light up the room, and he was so creative. He would tell us stories and act them out. He liked to paint . . .” For the next hour, Louis lets me fall in love with a friend. It’s easy to see how much he cared for the man, and how deeply they are all connected. The stories make me laugh as much as they make me cry, and when he trails off, I’m almost desperate to know more about someone I will only know through them.

Someone I couldn’t save.

Someone my father killed.

TWENTY-EIGHT

Iget a few hours of rest once Jonas comes and takes over, and I wake to the sound of grunting. When I open my eyes, I realise Nico and Jonas are sparring right there in the hallway. A nervous Bert flits around them, making sure they don’t break anything. Sitting upright, I feel my mouth dry at the sight of their huge, glistening muscles as they move with precision and speed that rivals mine.

That’s when I realise I haven’t trained or sparred in a few days, and it’s evident from my turbulent emotions and nightmares from being back here that I could use it. Rolling out of the sleeping bag, I rip my long shirt over my head, leaving me in a sports bra I fell asleep in and biker shorts. I tie my hair back, grinning when Jonas spots me. His eyes widen before they simmer as Nico lands a hit that sends him flying back into the wall.

“No fair! Her tits distracted me!” Jonas groans.

Nico whirls, his eyes widening as I move towards him with purpose. “I think they would distract anyone,” he murmurs. “You want in?”

I nod, rolling my shoulders back. “Both of you against me. I could do with a challenge.” I smirk.

“Oh, she has a death wish.” Isaac sighs, leaning against the wall as he comes from the kitchen.

“Or maybe I’m just that good.” I wink at him, ducking below a hit from Jonas, who wasn’t really trying. They circle me as I stand there.

“Are you sure about this?” Nico asks, giving me a way out.

“I’ve fought bigger and faster opponents.” I grin. “Killed them too. Bring it, baby.”

“When I win, I’m going to fuck her.” Jonas laughs.

“Master Jonas!” Bert snaps.

“Sorry, Berty.” Jonas winks as I give him a grin.

“If you can beat me, I might just let you,” I murmur. He didn’t expect that, and I use it. I launch myself at him, tackling him to the floor before rolling to my feet as I smirk down at him. “But fight properly.”

“I won’t hold back,” Nico warns, his voice a whisper behind me as I duck a punch and spin to face him, sliding back.

“Good, then neither will I.” I smirk at him, seeing the flare of desire in his eyes.

Glancing over, I see Jonas push with his hands and flip back to his feet. “Oh, this will be fun.” It’s the only warning I get before he comes at me. He’s fast and feral, with no rhyme or reason to his movements. I duck and weave around him, managing to land a few hits before I’m kicked back into the table with a grunt. The vase there tips to the side in slow motion, and we all watch it drop to the floor and crack. All eyes go to Bert, whose eyes narrow before he looks at me.

“Kick their asses.”

I can’t help but laugh as I nod and throw myself back into the fray, ignoring Isaac’s, “Now you’ve done it.”

Nico manages to grab me from behind, but I use his body and height and throw myself back, flipping over him and taking him down. He rolls back to his feet, though, and then they work together. One is always behind me, and one is always in front. But what I said is true—my father and his mentors used to blindfold me and throw me into the ring with their guards.

I am used to being outweighed and outnumbered.

It’s fucking thrilling for me, in fact.

Adrenaline courses through me until I can’t help but laugh as I spin away from a sweeping leg. Despite their words, they are still going easy on me, so I decide to up the ante and force them to take this seriously. They wouldn’t go easy on each other, so I won’t let them go easy on me.

As Jonas chases me, I race towards the wall, kicking off it with three steps before I flip over him, then I wrap my arms around his head and bring him down in a headlock as he snarls, elbowing me. I grunt from the pain and hold tight with my hand on my wrist, tightening my hold.

There’s a cheer, and when I glance over, I spot Dimitri and Louis watching from the hallway leading to lab room. I grin as I release him and roll, avoiding Nico’s silent sneak attack I sense coming up behind me.
