Jonas watches me stride towards him, his eyes hazy with madness and lust. I straddle his lap, uncaring who’s watching, as I grip his chin and force his head back to meet my eyes. I need to penetrate that fog and make him understand. After all, he’s the wild card.

“You touch one hair on her head, and I will chop off your dick.”

“I knew you liked it.” He grins, gripping my hips and tugging me over his hard length. I try to swallow my gasp as I narrow my eyes. “Though chopping it off to keep for your pleasure is sexy as hell, I’ll admit to liking it where it is.”

“Jonas.”

“Nova.” He grins, and I have to fight my own as I grip his chin harder, making his eyes smoulder from the pinch of pain.

“Please,” I beg, and that makes him jerk, his eyes turning serious. “Please don’t hurt her.”

“I would do anything for you,” he replies, and I don’t know what’s scarier: his madness or the fact that when he says that, his gaze is clear and serious for the first time since we met. Sighing, he looks over at Ana. “Fine, you’re safe from me. Thank your sister for that.” He leans up and kisses me quickly. “Now, if you’re not going to ride my dick, let me go so I can deal with this hard-on.”

For a moment, I debate it before sliding off his lap. He stands and stretches, and Ana quickly averts her eyes as Jonas winks at me and then wanders off, leaving me shaking my head.

“He scares me,” she murmurs.

“He should.” I look back at her. “I’ll go get the research for you.” I look at Isaac then, and he nods, letting me know he’ll watch her as I stand. Although I am thankful for him, I still hurry. They watch me, but I force myself to head back to my sister and hand her his books to start with.

Holding them tight, she nods at me, taking this seriously, and hurries off as well. I watch her go before looking at Nico and Isaac. “Well, we are all on break, right? So what shall we do?”

Nico groans as Isaac laughs. “I have an idea.”

I wiggle my eyebrows, even though I know that’s not what he means, but it’s nice to see them both grin. To be honest, I’m exhausted from this conversation and from seeing my sister hurt, and as usual, Isaac notices, so when he leads me outside into the sun, I turn, wondering what he’s doing.

“Let’s play hide and seek.” He grins, jumping on the spot. “I could do with some exercise, and I never got to play it as a kid.”

“Me either.” Nico frowns. “What do we do?”

“You never played hide and seek?” I stare, open-mouthed. I know they are doing this for my benefit, and it makes my heart melt as I grin. “Oh, this will be fun.”

“What are the rules?” Nico demands seriously.

“I count to thirty, and you hide while I do. We will limit it to the trees and property here. No going too far or out front. If I find you, you’re it.”

“I’m so going to win.” Isaac grins. “Cover your eyes, sweetheart.” Laughing, I do as I’m told and spin around, starting to count. I hear them racing away, and I can’t help but laugh, just like they knew I would.

When I’ve finished counting, I drop my hand and look up for some reason, spotting Ana at the window of her room, watching us. She looks so alone and so lost that I hesitate, but with a determined grit of my teeth, I turn back to my men, knowing they did this for me. They are right. I need some laughter and fun. She’s made her bed, so now she must lie in it. I can’t protect her from everything, and it’s time I started living for myself.

I run into the forest, leaving her behind to find her own way, and a weight I didn’t even know I was carrying lifts with each step I take away from her and that house.

THIRTY-FOUR

Grinning, I press my back to a tree. I don’t really want to hide, since I want her to catch me, but I want to listen to her giggle as she searches. Her steps are loud despite the fact she knows better. She’s enjoying this. This is exactly what she needs, and honestly, so do we. We’ve been working so hard that we haven’t just had fun or enjoyed life in far too long. Nico needed a distraction from his anger at the world and her sister, and I did as well, so this seemed like the perfect thing to do.

The sun shimmers through the trees. It truly is a beautiful estate, despite everything that happened here. I can’t hear or see Nico, but I know he will take this very seriously. I have different plans, and I don’t even realise it until I hear her draw closer.

Seeing her coming down the stairs with bruised lips, mussed hair, and a glowing expression was enough to cause feelings, such as jealousy and possession, that were so strong, it scared me. I told myself I wouldn’t make a move on Nova, not after the kiss, but I can’t resist.

I really can’t.

She makes me want things I have no right wanting, and I’m tired of hiding my desires and trying to be her friend when she clearly doesn’t want that. She crossed the line with Jonas, but that doesn’t mean she’s willing to with the rest of us, and yet I can’t hold myself back from chasing her now.

I’m hunting her even though she’s the one searching.

I’m leading my prey into my trap, and I’m not bothered by that in the slightest. She giggles, and I tilt my head, realising she’s close. Suddenly, she jumps out from behind the tree, her grin wide and carefree. “I got you!”

“No, I got you.” I smirk as I tackle her, lifting her over my shoulder. She laughs, and when I throw us down on the leaf-covered ground, her eyes alight with happiness.
