The next morning, I’m stretching my legs when my phone buzzes in my pocket. I move away from the cabin we rented for the night and sit in the grass, and then I answer the FaceTime. Ana is in the lab, and she smiles softly at me when she sees me. She still looks tired though.

“I’m glad you got there safely,” she greets.

“How’s our patient?” I ask.

“See for yourself?” Grinning, she tilts the camera, and I see the soldier sitting up. He waves at me with a wink.

“I wanted to thank you for saving me,” he begins. He glances at Ana. “Both of you.” His eyes seem to soften and almost heat when he looks at my sister, and my eyebrows rise. “I never told you my name before I passed out. It’s Sam, Sam Danes. I was a soldier before I was recruited to be part of a clinical trial. We were never told what it was for, and by the time we were in, it was too late. Most of my unit died from what they did to us. Only I survived, and just barely.” Ana moves closer, and he offers me a stern look. “I know you are going after them. Make them stop. Make them pay.”

“That’s the plan.” I nod. “Ana, look after our patient. Sam, look after Ana and make sure she sleeps.”

“I will.” He grins, and Annie ducks her head with a blush.

“Let us know when you find anything. We will be here,” Annie says.

“Of course. I’ll let you get back to it.” I snigger. “Bye, love you.”

Her eyes widen as they fill with tears. The words had been an instantaneous reaction, but I don’t regret them. “I love you too, Nova. Be careful.”

Dropping the phone, I see the others loading up the trucks, so I head over to help them.

I am ready to get back on the road and to this next location, hoping it holds something since they never went to the location in Scotland like Sam thought. It seems we have to hunt them ourselves, and that’s just what we will do.

It’s time to end this once and for all.

FIFTY-SIX

“You have got to be kidding me?” I groan as I sit at the side of the road, scanning the maps on my laptop. “It seems we have gone past it. The bloody roads all look the same here.”

Louis sighs when he peers over my shoulder. “They want it hidden. It’s a good sign at least.” I nod as I stretch and accept the water Isaac hands over. Nova is stretched out on the truck’s roof, sunbathing, with Jonas next to her, and for a moment, my eyes linger on her.

Like she feels my gaze, she lifts her head and gives me a wink. “You find it yet, babe?”

“I think so.” I know I’m blushing, especially when she does an incredible roll and flips off the truck to land on her feet before she heads my way and kisses me softly.

“That’s my boy,” she purrs and looks at Louis. “Well, let’s go then. What are we waiting for?”

Once we’re back in the trucks, I keep a careful watch on the satellite phone and navigate us through winding hills and topography. Louis is right; they want this hidden and hidden well.

Is that a good sign or a bad one?

LOUIS

“There’s life,” I murmur, watching through the sniper rifle’s scope.

Our earpieces are in, and D is back at the trucks, trying to access their systems. Nova is with Nico on the other side of the hills, hidden behind foliage, Isaac is protecting D, and Jonas is with me.

The location is right in the middle of mountains, completely hiding it from view. We had to hike to get here, and I wanted as many angles as possible. Passing the scope to Jonas, I grab my camera and shoot as many pictures as I can, needing them to come up with a plan. I know Nova will be doing the same.

But there’s life.

I see planes on a runway, bunkers with doors open, and buildings with soldiers and scientists streaming in and out.

We’ve finally done it. We’ve finally found their main location.

This is our chance.
