“Why was he after me?”

“I already told you.”

“Well, tell me again.”

“He wanted to hurt you to get back at me.”

“For what?”

“For his club.”

“What club?”

When he hesitates, I shake my head. “I know you’re lying about it being revenge. At least with a rival club. So please, Dad, just tell me why he tried to kidnap me. Why me and not Laurel?”

“Laurel’s out of the country.”

“That’s bullshit, and you know it! She was there at the wedding reception, but he followed me!”

“That’s all I know.”

“Why are you lying? Why can’t you just tell me? Why did you drag Barrett into your lies?”

He doesn’t respond with a single word, just types on his phone.

“This is ridiculous! I deserve to know!” I yell at him before I storm out.

As soon as I got back to my car, I call the rescue center in Atlanta.

“Thanks for calling PAWs. How can I help you?” a voice asks.

“Hi, I was wondering if you have any positions available.”

“We’re always happy to have volunteers.”

“Ah, yeah, I would, but I need a paying position.”

“I believe we’re still searching for an assistant.”

“To the CEO?”

“Yes, that’s the one.”

“Okay, that’s great because I actually applied for that position and was going to come down for an interview, but I canceled. Is there any way I could reschedule?”

“Just a moment,” he says, putting me on hold. When he comes back, he says, “Mrs. Ryan has an opening on Thursday at nine thirty.”

“I’ll be there,” I say in relief. It’s not a great position, but it’s the best I’ll probably be able to get with half a degree.

And it’s several states away, which is where I want to be right now, as far away from the two men keeping secrets from me as I can get.

While I don’t owe them a notice that I’m leaving today (to get there in time for a good night’s sleep tomorrow before the interview), I do want to tell my grandma goodbye. At least I won’t have to worry about seeing my father there.

And I also want to find out how much she knows about Calvin Dockery, so I fold up his mug shot and slip it into my purse.

“Grandma? Are you home?” I ask when I walk through the front door a few minutes later.

“In the laundry room!” she calls.
