“I think so, yeah.”

“Good. That’s good. I know my brother is happy,” I tell her. “And, um, Thane? What about him? Is he back too?”

“Oh, yeah. He was just here…” She trails off while doing her own search of the crowd. “He must have left.”

“He was here earlier?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“Why what?” Dammit. If I had left the shop earlier, maybe I would’ve got to see him.

“Why are you asking me about Thane? I thought you two hated each other.”

“I don’t hate him. Wait. Does he hate me? Did he say that he hates me?” I can’t help but ask her.

“No. He hasn’t ever said anything about you. He hasn’t said much of anything lately. I know he wanted to come back for his Harley, but now if we stay here, I’m not sure where he’s going to live. I feel like it’s my fault for dragging him from one place to another.”

“So you don’t know where he is?”

“No.”

“Right, well, um, if you find out where he’s staying, will you let me know? I just want to…apologize for being a dick since I’ll probably have to see him around if you and Bear are back together.”

She smiles and says, “Sure thing, RJ. Anything for you.”

CHAPTERFORTY-FOUR

Thane

Being back in town feels nice. Different but nice, knowing that I could drive down the street and see RJ. It’s unlikely but more possible than when I was in Atlanta.

But even if I never see him again, there’s something I have to do.

I ran into Isaac at Barrett’s grand opening but knew it wasn’t the place for this conversation.

Instead, I followed him back to the clubhouse.

“Thane! Thanks again for bringing my baby girl back. So, how have you been?” Isaac asks when he climbs off his bike in the clubhouse parking lot. Once his helmet is off, he grabs the back of my neck to give me an embrace, followed by a slap on the back, before letting me go.

“I’m gay,” I blurt out. Here, outside the clubhouse, is as good a place as any to be honest with him.

“You’re great? Glad to hear it,” he says as he turns away to start heading to the bar’s front door.

Did he really mishear me, or is he pretending? Either way, we’re going to have this conversation so he can kick me out of the club or punch me or whatever else he wants to do when he finds out.

“I said I’m gay,” I tell his retreating back a little bit louder.

Isaac stops and spins around to face me again. “Gay? Is that why you ran off out of town with Lyla?”

“What? I thought…I thought you would want me to go with her to keep an eye on her.”

“Why? Now that the fucker who was after her is dead, she’s safe, right?”

“Yeah, but…”

He starts walking back to where my feet are still stuck to the pavement. “Now, don’t get me wrong. I was relieved that Lyla wasn’t in a strange city all alone, but you didn’t exactly give me a heads-up. What if I needed you around here? You should’ve asked me first.”

“You didn’t need me.”
