“So…where am I?”
“You’re in the hospital.”
Hospital? I take a deep breath, and yeah, it definitely smells like a ton of antiseptic trying to cover up the nasty, underlying urine scent.
“You were shot. You had to have an exploratory surgery to repair vessel damage and make sure there wasn’t any damage to your intestines or any other organs. Luckily, there was just a little blood in your abdomen, so they stitched you up. You don’t remember what happened?” she asks like it was obvious.
“What happened?” I got shot? Who the fuck shot me and made my side burn like this? I’ll fucking kill them.
“We were out shopping. A creepy guy was following us.”
That part rings a bell.
“Oh yeah. Creepy guy…he shot me. Dragged you.”
“Yeah, he did.”
“Did I hit him too?”
“You did. You saved me. He was trying to kidnap me!”
“No shit?”
She swipes away the tears I didn’t see fall on her cheeks. “No shit. You were shot in the side and lost a lot of blood. They had to give you more.”
“Damn.”
“Yeah. Everett’s gone to get lunch. The guys from the club are still in the waiting room, but I wanted to be the first one to see you when you woke up. You peeked at us for a second this morning, mumbled ‘fuck off,’ then went back to sleep. Do you remember that?”
“No.”
“You didn’t hear us? Or hear the guys arguing last night? Everett said it got loud.”
“What guys arguing?”
“Oh, um, Barrett, RJ, and Jordan were here last night.”
“What? Why were they here?”
Barrett was obviously here for Lyla. Did RJ and Jordan just tag along to keep him company? Or did they come because they were worried about me?
Nah, it must be the first one.
“I’m not sure,” Lyla answers. “Do you think they would hurt you?”
“Hurt me? Why would you say that? The creep who shot me wasn’t a Savage King.”
“RJ and Jordan lurked around the hospital for hours.”
“They did? With Barrett?”
“Yeah, they got here while you were still in surgery, then Barrett just showed up later.”
“Wait. Back up. They were here before Barrett?” My painkillers must be causing me to hear shit.
“Yes. They were here before him.”
“Are you sure?”
