“I was just messing with you. Lighten up. You’re straight. I get it. I’ll keep my mouth shut.”

Since I don’t really want to leave, I stretch back out on the bed, as far away from Thane as I can get.

And then, we watch the movie together in silence.

CHAPTERTWENTY-TWO

Thane

Nights soon become my favorite part of the day.

I sleep a lot when the sun is up, mostly because I’m bored. Every night, though, at least for the past three, RJ shows up after Lyla and Bear are in bed, and then the two of us watch a movie together.

He still sits as far away from me as he can get, so close to the edge of the mattress that the slightest wind might blow him off. I want to ask him if he thinks he’ll catch the gay from me, but I’ve refrained from bringing up the g-word again because having him around is better than being alone.

Not that I’ve completely let my guard down around him yet. I keep the 9 mm under my pillow just in case he decides to try and off me.

Even though he’s a few feet away, it’s impossible not to notice how RJ always smells clean and woodsy right after his shower. Under the soap smell is a citrus scent that I’m guessing is the hand cleaner auto mechanics use to clean up after being elbow-deep in oil and grease all day.

I thought his blue coveralls were sexy on him until I saw him in jogging pants and a white T-shirt. That’s what he wears every night. The only thing that changes is the color of his pants. One night was light gray, the next dark gray, and last night was dark blue.

That’s how bored I’ve been that I keep a mental list of little RJ details.

I’m so absorbed by him that when the wall banging starts, I nearly jump out of my skin.

RJ chuckles, then says, “You want to get out of here tonight?”

“Out of here? Away from their sexcapades? Fuck yes. What do you have in mind?”

“Are you sure you’re okay getting out of bed?”

“Yeah, blondie, I’m okay.” I don’t tell him that I’m well enough to leave because I’m not ready to go back to the real world yet. It’s ironic since I couldn’t wait to leave when I first got to the Fultons’ house. Less than a week later and it’s my favorite place.

“Then put on some jeans and shoes. Shirt too.”

“Okay.”

RJ doesn’t leave while I get dressed. Which is surprising, but I’m not complaining.

“Have you always been…” he starts while my back is to him as I pull my jeans over my ass.

“What?” I turn around to face him as I zip my pants. I like that he’s watching me. That’s when I figure out what he was asking. “Have I always been what, RJ? Gay?”

He nods and glances away. “Yeah, that.”

“I figured out it was only guys for me when I was a teenager.”

Grabbing a clean shirt from my duffle, I slip it on over my head.

“So, you’ve never been with a woman?”

“No.”

Sitting down on the edge of the bed, I slip my shoes on. Bending over to tie them isn’t fun for my side. I’m gritting my teeth while tying the second set of shoestrings when RJ says, “And you’re a top?”

“Somebody’s been doing some research.”

“No. I mean, Jordan just said he thought you were a top. We talked about some things, and I found out he’s bi.”
