Tonight, there won’t be any popcorn fights in bed or movies with RJ, which sucks. To celebrate his birthday, it looks like his brothers invited every single woman in town between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five to the bar to help him celebrate.

One of whom is a pretty fake blonde on the upper end of that age range, who plops down on his lap. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she whispers something in his ear that makes him blush.

“Looks like the birthday boy is having a good time,” Jordan says when he takes the seat at the bar next to me.

“Yeah, looks like it.”

I can’t seem to look away, even though seeing him with her makes me feel sick. It was stupid to think anything would happen between us just because he got excited from a pat down. RJ’s made it clear that he’s not interested in men. Not interested in me. The nights we’ve hung out has been as friends. Nothing more. He’s just another stupid, pointless crush I should get over already.

Leaning in closer, Jordan says, “Is there really nothing going on between you two?”

I force my eyes away from the birthday boy and stare down at my glass of water instead. “Definitely not.”

“Really? You seem to be all healed up, and you’re living under the same roof…”

“It’s not like that,” I assure him. “He’s straight, and even if he wasn’t, I’m pretty sure he still hates me. I apologized to RJ when I moved in and promised him I would keep my hands to myself.”

“What…the…fuck. Seriously?” Jordan asks.

“Seriously.”

“Wow. You’re an idiot.”

“Oh yeah? Fuck you, prospect.” I slide off the stool and start toward the door, unsure where I’m going since I got a ride here from Lyla.

Jordan follows me out the door to the parking lot.

“I didn’t mean it the way you think, okay? You fucked up, that’s what I’m trying to say. Damn. I thought RJ just didn’t want to confide in me. I had no idea it wasn’t happening.”

“What are you talking about, Jordan?” I ask when I turn around to face the kid.

“RJ never told you?”

“Told me what, jackass?”

“That he was interested.”

“Interested?”

“Yeah, in you, hooking up with you.”

“You’re lying.”

“No, I’m not. Look, the whole almost dying stunt you pulled –”

“Stunt?”

“Yeah, it freaked RJ out. He thought he lost you, lost a chance to take you up on your offer.”

“You’re full of shit.”

“Why would I lie about this? If I had been over to the house and talked to you before now, I would’ve told you sooner.”

“Well…fuck.”

“Yeah.”
