A rush of anxiety jetted through me, the sensations so suffocating that I quickly shoved him away, breaking the hold. The moment I tried to rush off the dancefloor, Maverick grabbed my arm, jerking me against him, sliding his hand down my back, cupping my buttocks.

“You’re not going anywhere. You’re safe with me, Lily. I ain’t gonna let anyone hurt you.” There was such defiance as well as assurance in his words that I almost broke out into sobs. But as his eyes pierced mine, his hold even tighter, I melted into him, hungering for the same passion we’d shared before.

“I’m damaged,” I whispered, uncertain he’d heard me.

“So am I.” The three little words were exactly what I needed to hear. The second he captured my mouth, holding our lips in place, I felt all the fears slipping away. I wasn’t a fool. This was still just a moment in time, but one so beautiful that fighting what had furrowed inside since I’d met him would be useless.

He took his time, his tender actions igniting more than just a heightened layer of passion. There was no one else in the room, no sounds permeating the ragged beating of my heart. There was just the two of us. As he slipped his tongue inside, dominating mine, I arched my back. The kiss became a wildfire within seconds, and I felt as if I was spinning out of control. He held me so close that I could feel his scattered heartbeats, could sense his desire increasing with every passing second.

When he finally broke the kiss, he pressed his forehead against mine, his chest rising and falling. Then he grabbed my hand, his eyes narrowing. “Baby. You’re comin’ with me.”

CHAPTER8

Maverick

I’d told myself at least ten times to stay the hell away from her. I wasn’t good for anyone, especially someone as vulnerable as Lily. All I’d done was think about her in the last twenty-four hours. Her lush body. Her voluptuous lips.

The way my cock felt being inside of her.

The moment the asshole drunk had pawed her, all bets were off. She was mine. No other man was ever going to touch her again.

I knew my attitude and my actions were as close to being Neanderthal as humanly possible, but she obviously needed someone to watch out for her.

There was a mystery surrounding her and I continued to sense danger, but I didn’t give a shit at this point. Maybe I was thinking with my dick, but the increased need when I was within a few feet of her was like a ticking time bomb ready to explode. Devouring her was the only possible option. Just seeing her in the tight miniskirt was enough to keep my blood pumping, tightening my balls.

“I can’t,” Lily insisted.

“Yeah, you can. I’m not taking no for an answer.” The fire in her eyes made me want to drag her into the bathroom of the bar, fucking her like a wild animal, but she deserved better.

She shook her head, dragging her tongue across her lips. Then she nodded once.

As if the woman had a choice in the matter.

Chuckling, I tossed a couple of bills on the bar, grabbing my coat and waiting as she’d gone to get her things. Then I’d ignored her cries that she needed to get her truck, planting her inside my Dodge Ram instead. I half expected her defiant streak would come alive, the woman doing her best to get away from me, but she remained in the seat as I climbed in.

Sam immediately tried to jump over the console into her lap. To hear her laughing brought a smile to my face.

“You do take him everywhere,” she said as he continuously licked her face.

“If a place doesn’t take dogs, I won’t go there.” I started the engine, unable to keep a grin off my face. It had been a long time since I’d smiled. She was the reason.

I sensed her heated gaze. “I like that about you.”

“At least you like something.”

“This isn’t a good idea.” Her voice suddenly seemed so small. I preferred the rebellious woman who fought me every step of the way.

“Do I look like I care?”

“I’m bad news.”

“Damaged and bad news. Are you trying to keep me away, Lily? It ain’t gonna work if you are. I already told you once, but I’ll say it again. I take what I want and no one and nothing can stop me.” Whoever had abused her in the past had stripped away her ability to trust, mostly in herself. Maybe I was a fool to think I could heal even a small part of her, but the protective side of me wanted to try.

“Just take me to my motel.” There was no conviction in her tone.

I laughed and swung out of the parking lot. “That’s not happening, sweetheart.”

“You’re an incorrigible man.”
