“In here,” Wren guided, her expression apprehensive.

As Snake carried him into the examination room, I could easily tell I needed to get rid of the audience in order to concentrate.

“Guys. I hate to ask you this, but please stay out here. Wren. I could use your assistance.” I gave Maverick an imploring look, silently begging for his help.

“She’s right. Let her work,” he told everyone in his usual commanding voice, trying to guide Chasity away from the door. She struggled even as he backed her away by several feet.

I walked inside, tension in every muscle. Snake lifted his head, studying me intently. There was so much pain in his eyes.

“Please. Don’t let anything happen to him,” he said in a haunted voice.

As he walked out the door, Wren closed it behind him.

And I shocked myself, saying a second prayer.

I had to save the baby. Not just for Apollo and his family, but for me as well.

This was my moment of salvation.

CHAPTER14

Maverick

“Fuck!” Snake yelled as he pounded his fist against one of the walls.

At least ten minutes had passed, maybe more. Time had no meaning at this point.

Chasity rubbed her eyes. “What happened?”

“The pup just collapsed and started seizing,” Houston answered after everyone else remained quiet.

I leaned against the wall, closing my eyes. This was the last thing anyone needed. When Sam continued to nudge my leg, I slid down the wall, rubbing him behind the ears. Sophie was pacing the room, her anxiety as high as mine.

“What do you know about this girl?” Hawk demanded. Sergeant Jake Travers had been considered one of the best helicopter pilots in the marines. I’d trained with the man, learning to respect his skills even if I’d never admitted it to him. The two of us were all testosterone at the time.

There was no reason for his question to cause a caustic reaction but it did.

The tone.

The attitude.

The snarky words.

“Enough to know she’s better than your sorry ass,” I responded, finally snapping my head toward him, narrowing my eyes seeing the grin on his face.

“Hey, buddy. I was just kidding. Is there anything I can do?” he asked.

Exhaling, my stomach was in knots. She had no idea how important saving Apollo was. While I was proud of her for finding courage I didn’t know she had, if anything happened to the dog, it would devastate her.

Let alone what it would do to Snake, who was already pacing the front room like a lion prowling a cage.

“No. I don’t know what the hell is going on, but it sure seems suspicious that he was poisoned.” As soon as I made the statement, half the room seemed shocked, the other nodding.

“He’s right.” Chasity Garrington had singlehandedly brought Snake out of a deep depression after his return to civilian life. The fact she’d managed to convince him into having physical therapy on a regular basis hadn’t only helped his physical state, but his mental state as well. He’d been another guy who was a hair’s breadth away from sticking a gun into his mouth.

“He ran off, baby. I thought he was chasing Sam at first so it didn’t bother me. Then I heard a yelp. I went to look for him, but he ended up back at the party,” Snake snarled, immediately stopping short. The way he glanced at Phoenix was a clear indication they thought something was going on.

“I’m right. Aren’t I? He could have been poisoned.” I glanced from one to the other, then to Gage, who’d already joined us. Soon, we’d just have the party in here. “What the hell is going on?”
