“Yeah, why?” I repeated.

“Well, it would seem the reporters found a magic couple to boost ratings. Since you appeared that first night, Lily, people keep asking more about you.” Scorpion snorted. “They’ll come back, and I’ll throw them out again.”

“What do you mean I appeared?” she asked, her tone completely devoid of any inflections.

“The entire story went national.”

The darkness couldn’t hide her paling face.

The scent of barbeque couldn’t mask the fragrance of raw terror.

And the noise of the band couldn’t drown out her rapidly thudding heart.

“Bastards,” I said under my breath.

“That’s what I said. I’m grabbing a beer,” Scorpion said, totally unaware what was happening. As soon as he walked away, she removed her hand from mine.

“Are you okay?”

She dragged her tongue across her lips, shaking her head several times. “No. Why did they invade my privacy?”

“That’s what reporters do. Why does it make you nervous?”

The way she pressed her fingers against her lips was troubling.

“What’s going on? Talk to me.” She twisted around, backing toward the road. “Where are you going?”

“They found me. I know they did.”

“What are you talking about? Who found you?” Now it was plural?

While she was doing her best to hold it together, her body was shaking, her mouth twisting. “I need to go. I’m sorry. I just… I can’t stay.”

“Baby. You’re scaring me. Who’s after you? You need to tell me.” When I started to walk toward her, she threw out her arm.

“No! Let me go. You don’t understand. You’ll be killed because of helping me. No. No. I can’t let that happen.”

Oh, this was bad. “Nobody is going to hurt you or me. Let’s talk about this.” Her body was swaying back and forth. How the hell was I going to convince her?

“No. No.” She was determined, already scanning the darkness as if expecting to be cornered.

I took another step, then another. She stayed where she was.

Boom!

The noise was thunderous, crackling all around. I knew instantly the source of the noise. Firecrackers. I glanced at the sky for a split second. That was all the time she needed, bolting down the road.

“Sam. Come!” I took off after her. I knew without a doubt if I couldn’t stop her now, she’d disappear for good.

And I wasn’t going to allow that to happen.

Lily

Darkness.

I’d never been afraid of it even as a child. I’d reveled in the quiet the darkness offered, the peace that I could wrap myself up in if only for a little while. That had provided me with a level of comfort that no one had been able to take away.
