Maybe the old adage was right after all that truth would set me free. It had certainly given me courage.

While the FBI had taken the information, they’d promised me that they wouldn’t move in until I was there to see my father’s demise.

I only hoped they’d keep that promise.

“I don’t like leaving you right now.”

“Right now, you don’t like anything. I think you’d keep me locked in the house if you could. You haven’t let me out of your sight for five minutes. I thought you were going to rip the bathroom door off, so I had no privacy.”

“That’s not a bad idea. Consider it done,” he teased.

“Oh, no, you don’t.”

“I am in charge.”

“You just think you are.” I moved closer, rising on my tiptoes so I could kiss his lips. “You need to trust me.”

“It’s not you I’m worried about,” he growled then wrapped his arm around me, pulling me closer.

“Yeah, you need to start relaxing. I’m perfectly safe.” He captured my mouth, immediately sweeping his tongue inside. The taste and feel of him so close had me melting almost instantly. All I wanted was time to grieve then enjoy spending days and nights with him, but not until every aspect of my nightmare was finished.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, tangling my fingers in his hair as he dominated my tongue. Always the protector. Always the big mountain man who’d saved me from death.

I knew he’d be there again.

When I pulled away, I pressed my hand on his chest. “Don’t worry. Sam will be here with me while you’re gone.”

Hearing his name, Sam barked then moved closer from the open invitation. I lowered my hand to the pup’s head, rubbing gently.

“Don’t do anything foolish. You have the weapon I gave you.”

“Yes, I’ll keep it close. Just relax.”

“Right. Not until the fucker is dead.”

“I know Giovanni. He won’t let anyone do this but himself. I fooled him and he needs to save face.”

“Yeah, yeah. Trust you.” He backed away, a scowl on his face. “You can always back out.”

“No. This needs to be done. I can’t live my life looking over my shoulder.”

“Sam. You protect her. Hear me?”

Woof. Woof!

Maverick moved toward the door, stopping long enough to glance over his shoulder. “I’ll only be gone a couple hours. There is a deputy outside if anything happens.”

The man was taking this to the extreme. But that made me love him even more.

“I’m going to be fine. Giovanni is still in Chicago. Remember?” The FBI had at least kept a close eye on the man while they tried to build a case against both men. That gave us both some feeling of comfort. But would change given the bone I’d tossed in his direction. At least we’d have advance knowledge of his arrival.

“Don’t leave the house.”

“Yes, sir. I’ll be right here. Just go do your thing and we’ll have dinner when you get back. If you’re lucky, maybe I’ll plan a special dessert.”

“Uh-huh. You can’t tell me what to do and you better be right here. If I call you, pick up the phone.”
