“Awesome,” Faith said. “I’ll be there in twenty minutes. Morning Glory, right?”

“Right as rain,” he said.

She chuckled. “You’re a dork.”

“Yes, but I’m your dork.”

She giggled. “You better believe it.”

She hung up, finding herself in a great mood all of a sudden. The prospect of seeing David did that for her. She jumped up and brushed her teeth, dressing quickly and speeding to the Morning Glory, Turk in tow.

She arrived five minutes late, and when she saw David waiting for her, she said, “Sorry! I had to freshen up a bit.”

“You’re always fresh,” David said with a smile.

“Oh, stop it,” she said. “I’m already dating you. You don’t need to pretend I’m perfect.”

“Oh good,” he said with exaggerated relief. “I wasn’t sure how long I could keep this up.”

“I’ll bet you could keep it up as long as you needed to,” Faith said with a sultry smile.

David blushed, and Faith laughed. “So, what prompted this impromptu coffee date?” she asked, leaning forward, and propping her chin with her hands.

“Well,” David said. He sipped his coffee, looking uncharacteristically nervous.

“What is it?” Faith said. “Don’t tell me you’re about to break up with me when we’ve only been going out a month.”

“No, no, not at all,” David said. “Actually, the opposite.”

“The opposite?” Faith asked, furrowing her brow. “What do you mean?”

“Well,” David said hesitantly, “I was wondering where you see us going in the future?”

Faith blinked. “Like, what restaurants I want to try? Do I want to get away for the weekend? Something like that?”

He chuckled nervously and said, “No, I mean, long-term. Like, where do you seeusgoing?”

Faith didn’t answer right away. What exactly was he asking? “Like … marriage?” she asked awkwardly.

He offered another nervous chuckle. “Well,” he said, “I mean, I know it’s a little soon to talk aboutthatbut … well, yes. Maybe.”

She stared blankly at him, and he quickly said, “Not for a long, long time, obviously. I mean, I know there are like a hundred intervening steps between here and the altar, I just … well, do you think it’s possible we might take some of those steps?”

She stammered a moment before saying, “I mean, well … sure … eventually.”

“No, no, of course,” he said, “It’s just … well, I like you, Faith.”

“I like you too!” she said quickly.

“I know,” he said. “I just … well, I’m not getting any younger. I like you, but I don’t want to move forward if there’s no future in it.”

Faith stared silently at him. Why the hell was he bringing this up now? God, things were perfect right now! They had fun, they dated, they kissed, they did … other stuff. Why couldn’t that be enough? If there was a long-term for them, it would develop naturally, wouldn’t it? What did he expect her to say?

Her phone buzzed, and she quickly answered it, desperately hoping it would be something that could justify her leaving this awkward moment.

It was.

“Bold,” the Boss said, “get your ass to the station. I have a case for you and Prince.”
