“Coach it is,” Faith said, “and Michael will be perfectly content with the hotel you’ve chosen, sir.”

“When did you become a kissass, Bold?” the Boss asked.

Michael turned, expecting to see a smirk on Faith’s face. Instead, her lips were thinned in anger, and when she replied, “My apologies, sir,” her voice was laced with venom.

They left the office, and when they were in Michael’s car, he said, “What was that about?”

“The Boss? You know how he is.”

“No, I mean you. I’ve never seen you so angry with him before.”

She shrugged and looked out the passenger window. “I guess I just had enough of it today.”

“Enough of what? You’ve worked with him for years; you know he’s a hardass.”

“Did my mother die suddenly and appoint you as her successor?” Faith asked. “I was pissed, okay? It happens to the best of us.”

“You, too, I guess,” Michael said.

He waited for Faith to roll her eyes, but she only stared out the window. He probed a little more. “Upset because you’re missing your date?”

She sighed and turned to Michael, and his spirits rose a little when he saw her typical exasperated parent look. He grinned and asked, “So, how are things with you and David?”

“Fine,” she said resignedly.

“Yeah, he’s a good-looking guy,” Michael quipped. “Bet he looks just as good out of his clothes as he does in them.”

“Yes, Michael, he’s better than you,” Faith deadpanned. “He’s bigger and stronger and better than you in bed. He’s more manly in every way, and I have no idea how I was ever attracted to you.”

“Christ, all right,” Michael said, lifting a hand placatingly. “Boyfriend’s off limits. Got it. For the record, I was only asking because I’m happy for you.”

Faith sighed. “Thank you, Michael, I appreciate that, but … look, there’s nothing to talk about anyway. We’ve only been dating for a month.”

“All right,” Michael said. “I said he’s off limits, and I meant it. I won’t bring him up unless you bring him up. Speaking of, have you brought him up yet?”

“Oh my God!” Faith cried, and Michael’s spirits rose a little more when he caught the small smirk on her face. He no longer had any romantic feelings for Faith, but he preferred her happy and not in one of the moods she fell into so often since the incident with Jethro Trammell last year.

His smile faded as he recalled seeing her in the hospital. Turk, perhaps sensing his change in attitude, trotted in between them and barked. Faith smiled and stroked his fur. “So, how’s your new girl doing, Michael?”

“Ellie? She’s great. She’s everything I never knew I wanted. She’s sweet and kind and so empathetic. We’ll stay awake all night just talking about everything. I share so much with her. I never thought I’d meet anyone I’m so comfortable with.”

He glanced at her and saw a touch of something he thought might be wistfulness in his fire. “Sorry,” he said, “we don’t have to talk about her if you don’t want to.”

“No, please,” Faith said, “continue. I asked because I wanted to know. Believe it or not, I’m happy for you too.”

Michael grinned. “I’m happy for me too. I really never thought I’d find someone like her. I know that you don’t believe in soulmates, Faith, but I think she really is mine.”

“That’s good,” Faith said, “just make sure you don’t get involved with the divorce. I’m sure she’s ready to move on completely once her husband becomes her ex-husband, but in the meantime, just don’t put your nose somewhere it doesn’t belong. That only makes things worse.”

“Well, when she gets divorced, I’ll keep that in mind.”

Faith glanced sharply at him. “Whenshe gets divorced? I thought she had already filed.”

“Well,” Michael said, “not yet.”

Faith stared a moment. “You told me she was in the process of getting divorced. You told me she only had to wait for the paperwork to go through.”

“Well, that’s what she told me,” Michael said, “but we talked, and she told me that she only told me that because she was afraid if I found out she was still married, I wouldn’t want anything to do with her.”
