“Stop looking at her,” Freddy says. Actually, it sounds more like a warning. “If she sees you looking too hard, she will grow suspicious. Just look at me instead.”

I have no problem doing this. His charming, bright-blue eyes have a spell on me. I could stare at him all night, especially with the intensity that he was giving me. Sure enough, I feel Courtney’s gaze release us. I’m sure she’s starting to question how Freddy got such a hot redhead like me. I do look a lot younger than him. But I believe I could pass for thirty, maybe. So if anyone asks, I am thirty years old.

We stay on the dance floor for the majority of the night. Neither Freddy nor I catch the bouquet or the garter. And when it crosses after 10:30 at night, Freddy is four drinks in and slides a sneaky wet peck on my neck while we dance.

“How about we head back to the hotel?” I ask.

I think I’ve had enough of Chicago for now. I do want to return here. The brief conversations I’ve had have been stimulating and interesting. There’s not much depth in Hillpike, and there’s definitely not the bright lights and busy energy that I crave.

“Excuse me, Freddy?”

I turn quickly and see Courtney staring at us. She takes a deep breath, and all I can smell is tart wine. She gives me a cold glare and places her hand along her neck. Her left hand has a heavy diamond ring on it. Freddy looks at it and scoffs in disgust.

“I just want to let you know that I am engaged. And Stewart and I plan on marrying in spring of next year.”

Freddy shakes his head and forces out a quiet, “Oh, congratulations?”

“Stewart proposed last weekend. I’m sorry it’s taken me this long to share the brilliant news with you, but here we are.”

She smiles, showing her teeth. They are quite large for her face, I’d say. But I try to hold onto the words my mother would say: “Real beauty is in one’s spirit.” Well, if that’s the case, Courtney’s uglier than her teeth. There’s nothing but vicious heat stemming from her.

“Hopefully, everything will be sorted out with Dustin as we plan to move to Florida,” Courtney announces with an overtly authoritarian voice.

Freddy holds back. I can feel this as he squeezes my palm. There’s so much pain there. It’s a frightening pain, as I can only imagine him thinking about Dustin being pulled from him. Why is this woman so rude? She could’ve picked a better time and place to freak him out with this news. Something tells me that if I wasn’t here with him, she probably would’ve chosen another time. I wish I could take it away from him.

“Courtney? Really…Florida?” His tone of voice declares he’s over all of this.

“Yes, Freddy.”

“I’ll have to talk to my lawyer. And we’ll move forward then. I do not wish to engage with you anymore right now, so um…have a good night.”

Courtney is not satisfied with this. She takes a long, mean look at me. There’s a fire in her hazel eyes, the kind that stings. I glare right back at her.

“But who the fuck is she?” she snaps.

“Excuse me?” Freddy is surprised by her question. I’m not.

“I’m Sasha. Freddy’s girlfriend.”

I’ve been so ready to speak to her. But now, I’d rather show her something instead. She thinks she can make Freddy’s heart race with bad news at a wedding? Well, then, how about I make his heart race with good feelings instead?

I turn to face Freddy. I lift my heels up and push my mouth up toward his. Our mouths collide as my tongue slides between his lips. A wave of goosebumps scatters across my body. I feel like I’m held hostage by a hungry lust I cannot explain.

This hunger from Freddy soars through my body like a lightning bolt. His grip around my hips feels like punishment. As we kiss, he releases a soft growl, slow and long. I also hear a hiss coming from Courtney. She is not pleased. I feel her date, or should I say her fiancé, approach us rapidly. He tugs at Courtney, directing her away from us.

Pulling away from Freddy’s lips, I glance up at the dark Chicago night above us. I giggle, horny and naughty, pleased to have sent Courtney away from us. Twinkling butterfly lights hang beside us, hitting Freddy’s eyes at a perfect angle, making them look as serene as the ocean.

“That was fucking brilliant in many ways,” he utters.

I squeeze his hand.

“Come.” He lures me. “Let’s… let’s say our goodnights and head back.”

After hugging the bride and groom, I take one long look at the beautiful Chicago skyline before we stroll back to the hotel. Maybe it’s the universe that’s asked him not to ask for a separate room for me. I’m all for that.

Instead, he holds my pinky and ring finger in a tight grip and leads me onto the elevator. Quickly, he hits the close button. On the elevator, he comes near me, his mouth right behind my ear. He breathes into it, setting me into a sigh.

“I want you so bad,” I admit.
