“I’ll be fine.”

“Cool. Honestly, I think three hours will be enough for today. You can also test a couple items from our menu.”

That sounds like a plan. Food is a good way to distract myself from a man. I’m such a sensory person. I fall in love with pretty colors, big lights, good food, and definitely good cock. Man, I need my mind to chill.

I ended up shadowing an older server named Millie. She was an assistant teacher at my grade school, and I remembered her immediately.

While teaching me about the workings of tip out, Millie tells me that some out-of-towners will either overtip or leave coins. I assumed this place would bring in more people than the coffee shop. It still will, but not as much as I was hoping. Maybe I’ll become a worker bee and try to keep a couple shifts at the coffee shop.

“If you want, you can greet that table right there,” Millie says.

“Oh my gosh, I know that person.”

To my delight, I see Freddy. He hasn’t seen me yet. I saunter toward him, and he lifts his eyes off the menu and onto me. He’s not as shocked to see me as I’d assume he’d be. Instead, he gives me a warm and flirty smile. He likes white t-shirts that show every muscle on his body as he sits before me. His eyes are almost begging me to straddle him.

However, I’m glad he turns around because my father has walked through the door. Fuck.

“I got the job!” I try not to yell.

Dad congratulates me, then takes a seat in the booth across from Freddy.

“Great job, babe,” Dad says. “Did they literally start you today?”

I nod.

Millie twirls around me to drop off two glasses of water. “Greet them like their normal guests, sweetie,” she says.

I clear my throat. “Welcome to “Nightingale’s Steakhouse.” This evening our specials are clam chowder soup and we have our twelve-ounce filet mignon for $18.99, which comes with your choice of two sides. We also have a pitcher of Samuel Adams Summer Ale for $15 today. Oh, and there are usually five glasses in a pitcher.”

Dad and Freddy stare at me puzzlingly.

“I’m surprised you haven’t questioned why Freddy is here,” Dad says.

Uh-oh. I wipe my eyes and hit my forehead in a joking manner.

“I’m sure she has other things on her mind,” Freddy says, giving me a serious eye. “Like the interview. Getting the job, right? If anything, we should be celebratingyou.” Freddy adds to hush up his own corrupt thoughts.

He knows he’s been on my mind. I’m sure I’ve been on his.

“Of course,” Dad teases. “I get a kick out of Sadie seeing how aloof she is at times.”

“Got me there,” I say. “Anything to drink?”

“So you’re not gonna ask why Freddy is still here? He’s practically like an uncle.” Dad sips his water, looking a bit concerned.

Why did he have to throw the word “uncle” in? There is absolutely no relation here, and I’m too grown to refer to this man as an uncle if he’s really not.

Then I start overthinking. What if Dad figured it out? What if Freddy told Dad because, after all, he is his best friend. I nearly panic until I see Freddy give me a “You’d better not say a word” face through his furrowed brows and pursed lips. Ugh, he’s even sexy when he does that.

“I’m so sorry, Freddy. What’s going on? Are you moving back to town?” I joke.

He nods briefly, and I feel like I have a fever. Millie is busy assisting other tables, which I’m grateful for. I don’t want her to pick up on this odd conversation.

“I’m not entirely sure,” he says. “But I’ll be around for some time. Maybe move back.”

I squint at him because I don’t know what to believe. He told me he’d be here for a few days at best to create some kind of case for his son. Now he’s moving here? I wonder if this is new to him or something he wanted to keep from me.

“Oh, that’s cool. I know you’re happy, Dad.”
