“Thirty-one, why?”
“Do you have his number in your phone?”
“No. I deleted it. Why?”
Emily shakes her head. I don’t think she knows why she’s picking at me. Maybe her intuition tells her I’m with the man she desires, and since she has no proof, she’s acting erratic.
“You’re a detailed girl! You have no problem telling me all of the juice, and it’s like it was all—”
“Shameful? Absolutely.”
Ugh, I hate lying. It makes my throat itch, so I sip more water. I’m glad they don’t know that about me. Whenever my family sees me sipping water, they know it’s possibly a telltale sign of me lying.
“Emily, back up a little on Sadie. It’s my birthday week, and I want us all to get along.”
“Thank you,” I say.
Emily sucks on her teeth for a bit as I realize it’s now my turn.
“Linda. Truth, dare, double—”
“Promise!”
“Promise?”
Promises are like the most boring ones. Unless I use it wisely.
“Do you promise that no matter what your friends go through, you’ll be there for them?”
“Snooze fest! What kind of promise is that?” Emily rolls her eyes.
“I do, I promise!” Linda gives me a beaming smile, and that’s all I need right now.
So I think.
“What’s wrong with that question?” I have to ask.
“It sounds a little lame for a Friday night! Duh!”
“Well, I think it’s a good one.” ‘
I’m at a loss for words, and since I refuse to argue with Emily anymore, I’m thinking of exiting.
But how?
I can exaggerate my unexplained tiredness and say I’m too tired to leave, or I can use my sister as a way out. And that’s what I do; I text Savannah to call me immediately. She does.
“Huh? What is it?” I add false panic to my voice.
“You told me to call you, dummy!” Savannah yells back at me. I contain my laughter as this is the only time I’ve wanted to laugh after being called a dummy by my little sister.
“Savannah, are you sure you’re okay?”
“Oh… you’re so weird! Are you really using me to get out of whatever you’re doing?”
“Yes. I can be there, I guess.”
I roll my eyes at Linda and Emily as if Savannah is beckoning me.
