“Right now, I am okay.”

“Do you need me to pick you up? Probably best if you meet me near the road. I can’t come to your house.”

“I’m not even there.”

“Are you at Emily’s?”

“God, no. I’m with another…friend. One that you haven’t met, but I feel really safe with her, so I’ll probably be here until I find a way out of this town.”

“You can come here for a little while. Dustin’s back in town next week, but—”

“I don’t want to inconvenience you, Freddy, but I need to tell you something.”

“It sounds like you need to do this in person.”

“Yes. I think I do.”

“Because, knowing you, you’ll just say it. You’ll say whatever you need to get off your chest.”

I wish I could snap my fingers and have my redhead in my arms.

“I’m so sorry your father saw you with me like that, Sadie. I feel like a jerk. I know you know—”

“Freddy, listen, please. I know you didn’t have bad intentions or anything crazy like that. I wanted you, and you wanted me. That’s fine, but of course, some of us experience taboo situations, and some of us don’t. Our lives dealt us this.” She laughs. Her laughter comforts me as I can tell it’s a release we both need.

“Sadie, I…I need you to know that I love you.”

And there it is. I have to let her know. Only something like love could make me feel this much passion and concern for someone. One thing I’ve learned from Sadie is how to just go for it. She has that spirit and magic that is so needed to truly feel life.

“I love you, too, Freddy. I do.”

Her voice is cracking, and I want to see her eyes so bad that I’ll insist on buying her an iPhone to see her. I will download any app I can if it can guarantee that I’ll see her face. It may not be as wonderful as seeing her in person, but it’ll be a lot better than this. I just want to touch her, hold her, love her.

“Is that what you wanted to tell me, Sadie? If so, I said it first. I mean it, too.”

“I know you mean it, Freddy. I do.”

There’s something else. There’s something else she has to tell me.

“Braxton didn’t kick you out, did he?”

“No, no, no. Dad is livid, but…I haven’t seen him since he left to confront you. I’m not home, as you already know. I need space.”

“Sadie, I will get back in the car and come get you, but only if that’s what you want me to do.”

I don’t like the following silence, but I’ll take hesitation over anything else.

“I take that as a yes. Sadie?”

“It’s a secret…what I have to tell you.”

“You’re making me worried. What can I do to have you tell me whatever you have to say to me? Whatever I have to do, I’ll do it!”

I know she can feel the fire in my voice through the phone. She has to, and I hope that makes her sing what she has to say at the top of her lungs.

“Okay,” she sighs.

If I place my cheek anywhere closer to the phone, I’ll accidentally hang up on her. I ease my face off the phone and press my ear nearer.
