I shrug.

“I’m free until next week when Dustin returns. I’d love it if you stayed with me. You can see more of Chicago and maybe get more traction on how to move out there.”

He’s talking fast as if we are already on tight time. I think he’s either excited or nervous, maybe both. I’m pretty positive that he’s thought about me being pregnant. What man sleeping with a woman and getting the news that she has something important to share with him doesn’t think of pregnancy?

“Sure. I’d love that.” And I would. I was hoping he’d suggest something like this. I don’t want to stay in Hillpike for another minute.

“Have you seen your folks?”

“My mom just came by.”

“Really?” Freddy’s eyes bulge.

“She… she’s notreallymad about us. She’s accepted that I’m my own person and that I’ve always been someone who would do what I think I should and do what makes sense to me. It was really cool hearing her say that, Freddy. I’ve been trying not to judge myself, and it’s been hard.”

“Tell me about it. I understand.”

“But you know, I put myself in this situation, and it’s mine to navigate it, right?”

“Yes, well. You don’t have to do it alone.”

“Freddy… you’ve said since the beginning that we need to guard our hearts and just have fun. And it has been fun.”

He gives me a light smile, going back and forth from looking at the road to looking at me.

“It sure has. The most fun I’ve had with a woman has been with you.”

He places his right hand on my knee, and a bolt of intense energy slides up my leg, settling at the entrance of my womanhood. Fucking Freddy, my body is a magnet to any of his touches. I feel my head getting dizzy as I drink his words right up. I totally believe him. Why else would he come back here to pick me up?

“But I can’t guard my feelings because feelings need to be expressed,” I say.

“I get it. They do.”

“And I know we have tons of them since the cat’s been out of the bag.”

“Sadie?”

“Yeah?”

“What is it that you have to tell me?”

The energy in his car dims. His eagerness is too large to carry to Chicago with.

“Maybe we can stop for lunch on the road or something?”

My throat is getting scratchy, and I know it’s only a matter of time until Freddy finds out.

Within seconds, Freddy turns his right turn signal and zooms across two lanes.

“Cracker Barrel it is,” he proclaims.

Chapter 22

Freddy

Ineverconsideredmyselfimpatient, but Sadie has enough power to contort my characteristics. I feel safe enough with her that she can influence me this way. One thing about Sadie is she’s authentic. And the older we get, the more we value authenticity. Amazingly, she embodies this energy naturally. Many of us are frightened to be our authentic selves, and she’s an ad on how to be authentic.

“Of course, I will have to get the fried chicken. I’m not sure if I have room for it now, but maybe I’ll take it to go.” Sadie shrugs as she struggles to sip her coffee.
