“Yeah, just a friend checking in,” I say, not wanting to tell him it’s his son. I don’t want him to pull away like he did the other day.

He shifts his small backpack on his back and eyes me another moment, probably wondering if he should push, but he doesn’t. I’m glad he lets it go. I mean the make-up sex was fabulous, but I’d rather not feel any kind of animosity between us. I hated those few hours. They caused my entire body to lock up with anxiety.

“Hey! Quinn!” a female voice suddenly says behind me. My footsteps falter, and I turn to see Becca jog up behind us. Becca is the girl Grey saw me with before he disappeared for hours.

I met her yesterday when I was walking back from my hike and ended up chatting with her for a while. She’s a freshman at the University of Michigan and an avid photographer. We’re both artists and we bonded over things like color and lighting and our manic minds.

My lips turn up in a smile as I wave to her. I can see Grey’s footsteps slow as he finally comes to a stop.

He turns to glance at her and then me.

Yes, well, don’t you worry, boo. I have no interest in Becca. I only have eyes for you.

“Hey,” I say as she comes to a stop next to me, the camera around her neck swinging side to side. She really is gorgeous with that dark hair and dark eyes, and if I was anyone else, I’d be all over that. But I can’t see past Grey. I never have and never will.

If he discards me when this trip is done, I will pine after this man for all eternity.

“Hi! God, sorry, I was trying to catch up but you two walk super-fast, and I am obviously out of shape,” she says on a wheeze.

She gestures to her body which doesn’t look out of shape to me, but I don’t say anything. I’m not sure if she’s fishing for a compliment or if she’s just trying to be funny. I sure as fuck won’t be giving out any compliments when Grey is around—don’t want him getting any mixed signals.

“No worries,” I tell her and then gesture to Grey who is standing a little too far away from me at the moment. “This is Grey. Grey this is Becca. We met yesterday. She’s making her way across the UP with her family, just like we are.”

Grey gives her a small wave and then thumbs over his shoulder.

“Cool. Well, uh, I can head out. Give you two some space,” he says, and I roll my eyes.

“Babe,” I tell him and his cheeks darken at the term of endearment. “We are going to the fallstogether. Like we planned.”

Becca watches all of this, her eyes moving back and forth between us. I didn’t tell her what Grey and I were because I don’t really know myself. But she can make assumptions about us with the information at hand. I don’t mind.

Presume away.

I walk up and link my hand with his, and he just stares down at it, his breath coming out a little heavier. Well, hell, that’s making me think about fucking him, and my dick is perking up.

I clench his hand and peer up at him. He wets his lips, and I want so desperately to lean into him and press my mouth to his. I want to eat him.

Click.

My eyelids flutter, and I turn my gaze to Becca who is standing there, the camera pressed against her eye.

“Ugh, I know. So rude, and I can delete it if you want. It’s just…the way you two look at each other. I just had to capture it. Look.”

She sighs dreamily and then moves toward us, angling the screen of her camera so we can see. We both glance down and I feel my heart thunder in my chest. Fuck, she’s right. The way we are looking at each other…there are no lies here, just the absolute truth. Passion. Adoration.

“Can you email this to me?” I ask her, and she nods.

“Do I have your permission to snap more pics of you two along the way?”

Grey shrugs, running a hand over his head and I nod enthusiastically.

“As long as I get to keep them, go ahead.”

She beams and then we begin our walk up the trail, my hand still in Grey’s.

Yeah, this is a pretty good start to the day.
