Page 81 of Waiting For You

His voice is a screech, and I wince at the sound. Grey looks like he’s going to pass out, his face devoid of all color.

“We are,” I say softly, hoping it lessens the blow.

It doesn’t. It only makes him angrier.

“Oh my god. How long has this been going on?”

The way he says it, so accusatory, has me standing up taller.

“Just since this trip. There was never anything going on before that…”

He doesn’t seem to believe me, his eyes wild, his throat working overtime.

“How do I know you’re telling the truth? My dad could be some kind of pervert!”

That makes something ugly rise up inside of me, and I take a step toward my best friend, my hands slowly curling into fists.

“He’s not. Shut your damn mouth.”

I’ve never spoken to Joshua like this before. Never. And the shock of it has him stumbling back a little, his body slumped over the chair behind him.

“You’re fuckingmy dad.”

I give him a clipped nod.

“It’s wrong,” he whispers.

“And why the fuck is it wrong? I’m nineteen. An adult…”

“He’s my dad!”

His voice is raised once more, his hands fluttering around him. He’s having a hard time processing this, so I take a step back, giving him some space. Grey hasn’t moved from where I left him, his body in shock.

Oh fuck. I should have just waited to get my hands on him until later tonight. If I hadn’t been so desperate, all of this could have been avoided. But no. I was greedy and now I’ve ruined things for all of us.

I don’t think my friendship with Joshua will ever be the same after this, and I’m not sure Grey is going to let me touch him again.

But maybe it will all be okay. Maybe, by some miracle, it will all work out.

God, it needs to work out.

“I can’t believe you’d do this, Dad,” Joshua says, his eyes searing into Grey’s pale face.

Grey winces, looking like someone’s slapped him.

“I’m sorry.”

Those words hang between us, and Joshua swallows once. Twice. Before he utters, “You’re so damn selfish.”

And I see red, my entire body boiling with anger. I step forward, my body crowding his.

“Take it back,” I hiss, and Joshua’s eyes narrow as he shakes his head.

“I won’t because it’s fuckingtrue. I came on this trip because I wanted to give him a chance and look what he did behind my back. He’s a fucking selfish asshole—fucking my best friend.”

“Shut your mouth!”

“Quinn,” Grey croaks, but I can barely hear it over the roar in my ears. God, Joshua is such a prick, throwing hurtful words around like that, knowing what they’ll do to his dad. They’re cutting him wide open, I know it.
