But it’s so easy to get lost in your life. Time goes by so fast. I should have come home more often.

“Yeah…we’re something,” I say. Because I mean, we aren’t really friends. But we’ve also had sex. But she doesn’t need to know that.

So what does that make us? Just co-workers, I think.

“Alright, baby bro, I don’t want to be rude, but you smell and you might infect my kids. So why don’t I take them off of you and you can go shower? Then we can eat and run.”

I nod as she plucks them off of me like only a mother can, and I grab a slice of bacon and shove it into my mouth, remembering that I haven’t eaten since lunch yesterday.

I’m fucking starving, but the dread over my mom sits heavily in my stomach. Even the fact that Jasper is here in western fucking Kansas does nothing to alleviate that.

I’ll feel better once I see my mom and talk to the doctors. They have to have a plan in place. I need to know what it is for my sanity.

I shower in the master bedroom ensuite, washing away the filth of travel, and then move back out into the kitchen. Jasper is already there, helping Samantha pour the pancakes onto the griddle and the sight is so jarring that I just stare at him with my mouth slightly parted.

He doesn’t fit in here, in those tight jeans and that flashy blue shirt, but he does…in a weird way. He’s helping my sisters in the kitchen like he belongs. His movements are fluid, his gaze serious. Like he’s some kind of sous chef in a fancy restaurant.

“Didn’t know you cook,” I say, sidling up next to him and pressing against his side. He smells like Jasper. Like honeycomb.

He scoffs, rocking his hips to the side and knocking into me. He’s trying to push me away, but I just feel his body pressing into mine. I’m not deterred.

“You know very little about me,” he says and then flips the pancakes. I grab one off a plate and lean against the counter.

I rip into it. “Maybe you could tell me.”

“I could, but I won’t,” he replies and then transfers the pancakes onto a plate. “Just go eat and then we can go. Visiting hours are in two hours and lord knows how long it will take to get there. I bet we’ll get delayed by wayward cows.”

Bridgette and Samantha laugh at that, thinking he’s joking. But he doesn’t realize how true that is. Those fuckers graze for hours and if they get loose, there’s hell to pay.

I grab a plate and do as I’m told, my dick perking up at him being so bossy.

He’s such a bossy bottom, and fuck, I’m here for it.

He can take the lead in the bedroom all day long if he wants to. I’d just enjoy the ride.

I sit down at the table and eat as much as I can, all while watching Jasper move about fluidly, almost like a dancer. All of my nieces and nephews converge in the kitchen, having smelled the food, and I throw them around for a bit before moving to give my sister Kristy, who is lingering near the kitchen entrance, a hug.

She returns the gesture stiffly, her eyes settling on Jasper.

“He’s a friend,” I say, and she arches an eyebrow at me, making me squirm.

Whatever, she can think what she wants. It’s true. Jasper and I are nothing more than that. If we’reeventhat.

Jasper makes himself a small plate of food and nibbles on it, eyeing the chaos around us and I force my gaze away.

I can look later.

“You bringing him with you to the hospital?” Kristy asks, her eyes still carefully watching me. She’s unwavering and stubborn, so much like my dad.

“Would you rather I left him here?”

She purses her lips, always such a hard-ass. But then again, she did step in when my dad died and raised my punk ass. So there’s that. I get why she is the way she is. Just wish she was a little more accepting.

“No, I’d rather not have to entertain a stranger.”

I roll my eyes at her and shove the rest of my food in my mouth, forcing myself to eat despite not wanting to and really, just to help me shut up. I don’t want to say something I can’t take back.

“You ready?” Jasper asks a moment later, setting the dishes in the sink and folding his arms across his chest.
