Page 17 of Becoming Bennet

“Well, Bridgette and Samantha do. I’m not so sure about Kristy.”

Bennet turns his head and stares at me. “Yeah, she has issues. She can be a little much.”

I shake my head. “It doesn’t matter. This isn’t about me anyways. I’ve dealt with people not liking me my entire life…”

“Can’t see why. You’re so loveable,” Bennet teases, and I reach over and punch his arm lightly. Doesn’t do much damage because his arms are so strong, but it makes me feel better. Maybe it stung a little.

“Just teasing,” Bennet says with a sigh. “I like you just the way you are.”

I roll my eyes at that because Bennet doesn’t like me at all. We don’t like each other, but I digress.

“Can you tell me something to take my mind off all this shit?” Bennet asks as we near the turn-off for his house.

I think for a second before I blurt, “Well, I talked to Carter about something…”

Bennet runs a hand through his hair. “Yeah? What?”

“He wants us to consider collaborating.”

I knew that would do the trick. Bennet’s mind is now off of his mom and on this. I can tell by the way he sits up in his seat and glances at me attentively.

“And what didyousay?”

“Told him I’d talk to you first.”

“You’d consider it?” he asks, his voice surprised. Well, yeah, I am too. The only reason I’m considering this is because he looks so goddamn sad. And it would help Carter and the new site. Obviously I want it to do well.

“Yes. I would. Since we’ll be only exclusive to Carter’s new site, it would draw a lot of people in. And he offered some really large bonuses.”

Bennet huffs out a laugh. “Okay yeah, I’m down. Shit.”

We sit in silence as we move down the long driveway to the house and then I shut off the truck.

“We can do a teaser tonight if you want to. Draw it out over time. We can tease on Twitter that something big is coming. Then get the link from Carter and add it. We can try and get as many people as we can.” I’m starting to plan in my head the best way to maximize subscriptions. We really need to make them want it. They’ve been begging for another collab between me and Bennet for a while now. If it’s only going to be on the new site, it’s going to gain a lot of attention.

Bennet wets his lips. “Yeah, okay.”

“Only if you’re up for it. I know that you’re probably tired.”

He shakes his head. “I am, but this will help me think about something other than the fact that I might soon be parentless.”

“Gods,” I mutter, and Bennet runs a hand down his face.

“Alright, let’s go eat and then we can discuss what we want to do. But, just not in front of my family. They don’t…they don’t know what I do for a living.”

I nod my head, already feeling a flutter of nerves. “Got it. And are we gonna do the tease in that old trailer?” I think about the brown and green aesthetic. Not exactly pleasing to the eye, but it’s something different I guess.

“Why the fuck not? Give people something to think about,” Bennet says as he pushes his way out of the truck, and I’m left to follow.

Well, I guess that’s that then.

Shit.

CHAPTERFIVE

Jasper

Idon’t know why I agreed to this, but then again, I am halfway across the country. So really, what’s a little video of Bennet and me teasing our fans? It’s not like we have anything else to do out here. After we walked into the house, I helped make dinner. Samantha and Bridgette weren’t back from the hospital yet and Bennet kind of just folded in on himself, trying like hell to manage a smile for his nieces and nephews, but I could tell it was draining. So I took charge.
