Alfredo grabbed me into a bear hug, and I yelped, caught off guard. Luana joined in, and they squeezed me both, smiling, congratulating me.
When they finally let go, I looked at Lorenzo, who beamed at me.
Gino stood next to his brother, a grin plastered on his face.
“Looks like you’re breaking all the norms, huh, bro?” he asked.
“Just following my heart,” Lorenzo said.
Gino laughed, shaking his head. “You’re such a jackass.”
Lorenzo punched his brother in the shoulder, and they both laughed. I felt like I’d missed something—this was an inside joke, a brother moment.
“Come on, let’s get out there,” Lorenzo said and looked at me. “It’s going to be incredible.”
He was right about that. Not only the vineyard but our life together. It was going to beperfect.
That night, Lorenzo led me to his bedroom and shut the door. He walked to me and kissed me.
“That went so much better than I thought,” he murmured.
“Did you think they would reject me?”
“I was worried.”
“Because I’m not Italian?”
He didn’t answer me, which was answer enough.
“You could have given me a heads-up, you know,” I said. “What did they want for you?”
“You heard my uncle—an Italian woman who would give me children. It was sort of a big deal, an issue of inheritance.”
I gasped. “What would they have done if they didn’t like me? Taken it all away?”
Lorenzo shrugged. “It doesn’t matter.”
“How can it not matter!”
“Because I have you. I don’t care what I lose, I’m still the richest man in the world with you by my side.”
I melted and giggled. “You’re such a cliché.”
Lorenzo grinned at me and pulled me closer. “Yeah,” he said and kissed me again.
He wrapped his arms around me and grinded himself against me, showing me how much he wanted me.
I wanted him, too. Ialwayswanted him.
Lorenzo nuzzled my neck, and we collapsed on his bed in a tangle of limbs.
“I love you, you know,” I said.
“Good, because this whole thing would have been awkward if you didn’t.”
I laughed, and Lorenzo laughed too.
“I love you too.”
