“That’s so romantic,” Lexi said, her eyes sparkling.

“Not really,” I said. “We were kids. What did we know?”

“And you hit it off at the wedding,” Anna said. “Are you going to see him again?”

“Absolutely not.” I popped a piece of lettuce into my mouth.

“What?” Lexi and Anna cried out in unison. “Why?” Lexi added.

Because he’s the one person I could fall for.

“It was just a fling a long time ago and a case of fulfilling each other’s needs at the wedding. There’s no need to revisit anything or to make it a bigger deal than it is.”

I shrugged and picked up my burger, trying to figure out how I was going to approach eating the damn thing. In my circles, we ate the type of food that had specialized cutlery, different kinds for different courses. It wouldn’t be possible for me to eat this thing with the plastic fork that had come with my salad, so I was going in blind.

“What are you doing?” Lexi asked with a chuckle.

“I’m… eating.”

“You want to grab it with two hands and really dig in,” Anna said. She picked up her burger and demonstrated.

“I know how to eat a burger,” I snapped.

Lexi and Anna exchanged glances but didn’t say anything.

“You should see Lorenzo again,” Anna said, changing the topic to something equally uncomfortable.

“If he’s in Napa, it won’t happen.”

“Oh, no, he’s hosting an event here in LA tomorrow. In Orange County for the upper crust living there. You should come.”

“I don’t think—”

“Come on, you’re not scared to see him again, are you?” Lexi asked.

Something inside me hardened. I hated being called yellow. I hated being challenged.

“Of course not,” I scoffed.

“Good. I need someone to keep me company, anyway.” Anna looked pleased.

“If she goes with you, she might not keep you company. She might find her way into Lorenzo’s pants.”

I bristled. “Don’t be silly. I’d love to join you, Anna.” I wouldn’t allow Lorenzo to distract me the way he had at the wedding. I would show them both that Lorenzo was everything but a weakness.

Lexi and Anna glanced at each other again. I was getting sick and tired of their silent conversations. I would show both of them—and myself—that I could be in the same room as Lorenzo without falling for him or falling into bed with him.

How hard could it be?

LORENZO

Nomatterhowfuckinghard I tried, I couldn’t stop thinking about Celine. She was in my mind all the time. I woke up, my mind full of her. When I worked in the wine cellars, going through our barrels, checking the labels and tasting samples, I wondered what she would think of them.

When I got into bed at night, her face was the last thing I saw when I went to sleep.

Damn it, I didn’t have a number or anything.
