Everyone they were friends with now—the Conrad brothers and their wives, and even Anna—were great people. I wished that for Ava but sometimes it pissed me off that I didn’t have something like that.

You don’t need that, I reminded myself.

“What are you packing?” Ava asked, watching incredulously when I put my hairdryer into my suitcase.

“What do you mean?”

“You’re not going to be able to use that,” Lexi said.

“Why not?”

“There are no power outlets in nature unless you hold it up and hope for lightning to strike,” Lexi said and giggled at the idea.

I stared at my hairdryer. “So… what? I’m supposed to let my hair dry by itself?”

“If you get as far as washing it,” Ava pointed out.

“What!”

Lexi looked at me with a worried expression. “Do you know what camping is?”

“Of course I know what camping is,” I snapped. “I’m not an idiot.”

“Have you ever been camping?” Lexi asked, a little more careful now.

“Why the hell would I go camping?” I demanded. “I have a perfectly good house.”

Lexi and Ava glanced at each other.

“Maybe you shouldn’t go,” Ava suggested. “I really don’t think you’ll enjoy it.”

“I’ll be fine,” I said and took the hairdryer out again because they were still watching me like I had no idea what I was doing. Damned if I would admit that I reallydidn’tknow what I was doing.

“Anna will be there, she’ll help me,” I finally said.

I was so glad Anna was going too. The more I thought about it, the more I felt out of my depth. Why the hell had I said I would do this?

I knew exactly why—everyone kept telling me I wouldn’t, and the only thing I hated more than not having room service was being told what I could and couldn’t do. I would prove to them that Celine Forger could fucking camp. Even if I already hated every second of it and we hadn’t left yet.

“Where are you going?” Lexi asked.

“Somewhere in Oregon,” I said with a shrug. “I don’t really know more than that.”

“Oh my God,” Lexi said, and it looked like she was about to die of jealousy. “I would literally go in your stead in a heartbeat.”

“You really should arrange something for yourself,” Ava said. “If Bas doesn’t want to do it, then make it a girls’ thing. I’d totally come with you. We can leave the kids with the men, and we’ll get all the women together. You, me, Holly, Em, Anna and even you, Celine.” She looked at me, and laughter danced in her eyes.

“Pass,” I said.

Ava laughed. “You should have done it with this invitation, too.”

I looked up at her. “Look, I know you’re my sister now and we’ve been playing this game for a while, but I’m going to give you a bit of insight into who I am.”

“I’m sure I know who you are,” Ava said.

“Clearly not if you think I’m going to back down from this. If you tell me I can’t do it, I’ll do it just to prove you wrong.”

“Oh, I know that,” Ava said.
