“I understand you perfectly,” Celine said.

I chuckled. “It seems like we have a trend here of sticking it to the man.”

Celine and Morgan both looked at me.

“Don’t you think it should be done?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “Sometimes there’s merit in doing things the way they’ve always been done.”

Celine snorted. “Yeah, like you turning away from your family business only to turn back to it.”

“Exactly like that,” I said. “It makes me happier than I thought it would. There’s also merit in taking something that’s come a long way and letting it grow even more than it already has.”

“Maybe,” Celine said. “I guess it depends on what kind of family you have. What kind of family do you have, Lorenzo?”

Celine’s expression was challenging.

“A great one,” I said. “Aside from a few traditions I don’t always agree with, I think our family legacy is one that should be passed on.”

Morgan nodded. “Like raising a lot of little Carellis to keep on the tradition, right?”

I stiffened at that. “I don’t know if I would put it that way.” I’d referred to myself as taking the family tradition and running with it, not creating offspring to do it.

“Will you have kids?” I asked Morgan, hoping to turn the attention back to her.

“I don’t know,” she said and glanced toward Scott. “We’re not always on the same page, you know? Right now, though, it doesn’t matter. I have a goal, and so does he, so we’re not there yet.”

“What happens when you get there?” Celine asked.

“I guess we’ll see.” She shrugged. “What about the two of you?” Morgan looked from Celine to me and back. “Have you been together long?”

“We’re not really together,” Celine said.

That got my back up. “Aren’t we?” I asked.

The atmosphere shifted, becoming suddenly chilly. Celine glared at me, and Morgan shifted uncomfortably.

“Are we?” she challenged.

“I think I should check on the guys,” Morgan said and got up, leaving us alone. Nicole and Anna were still talking a short distance away, oblivious to the tension that was suddenly thick between us.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

“I’m camping, obviously,” Celine said, irritated. “Did you miss the memo?”

“You can’t keep doing this to me,” I said.

“What?”

“Pushing me away.”

“I’m not,” she said. “I’m here, aren’t I?”

“What are you here for?” I demanded to know.

“Proving you and your stupid bet wrong,” she challenged.

“Is that all?”
