It sounded so fickle now that I thought about it.

“Does your brother have a girlfriend?” I asked.

Lorenzo shook his head. “He hasn’t found a nice Italian girl he wants to marry, and he figures if he’s not dating to marry, then what’s the point—he’s enjoying the single life right now.”

“He wants to marry someone Italian, specifically?”

Lorenzo looked up at me and hesitated before he slowly nodded.

That seemed strange, but I guess it was to each their own.

When we finished our food, I felt better than I had in a long time. Lorenzo had been right about eating and that I’d feel differently when the meat was cooked. Not that I was going to tell him he was right.

Certain things I just didn’t tell a man.

“Now what?” I asked, glancing toward the door. “He’s still out there.”

“Yeah, we’ll wait until he leaves before we head out again.”

I nodded. I wasn’t sure Ieverwanted to head out again, knowing that there were things in the woods that could eat us. Until now, I’d felt like we were the only ones, but if there were other predators… my heart rate picked up and my head spun. I felt sick to my stomach—I felt like I could throw out all the meat I’d just eaten.

“We’re going to be fine,” Lorenzo said as if he could read my mind.

“How do you know?” My breathing came in faster gasps.

“I just do.”

“That’s not an answer,” I said, my pitch rising.

I’d thought we were going to be fine at the start, but more and more things had gone wrong, and when Lorenzo had said we could be here for weeks rather than days, reality had hit me. This was serious. We were in trouble, and if we didn’t figure out a way to get home soon…

“Don’t overthink it,” Lorenzo said. “The worst thing you can do is to start freaking out and panicking.”

“I think this is the perfect time to panic!” I cried out. My throat swelled shut and my chest felt tight. I struggled to breathe.

“It’s going to be just fine, Celine,” Lorenzo said and took my plate from me, putting it down so that I didn’t drop it and waste precious food. “Just breathe. Deep breaths, in through your nose, out through your mouth.”

He did what he wanted me to do so I could mimic him, and I did.

“Just don’t think about it,” he said.

“There’s nothing else to think about!” I cried out. “It’s just this, here, us. We’re stuck, and we have no way of figuring out how to get home.”

“Celine, breathe,” Lorenzo commanded. “We’re figuring this out. We came this far, right? We just have to take it—”

“If you say ‘one step at a time’ again, I’ll scream,” I warned.

Lorenzo shook his head, grabbed me, and kissed me.

His lips on mine were hard, demanding, and he held tightly onto me. I took the lifeline he threw me, grabbing onto it with both hands. I kissed him back, and his tongue slid into my mouth. I poured everything into him—my panic and fear—and Lorenzo absorbed it, drinking me in.

He was trying to distract me with sex, and it was working.

Lorenzo wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me against him. He grinded his hips against me, and his cock was hard. I got wetter and wetter just by the feel of him. Just unfurled at my core, and I gave myself over to it, let it be all that existed right now.

Lorenzo groaned into my mouth. Our tongues danced around each other, sparring, and the urgency grew—I wanted him inside me. I wanted him pinned to the mattress with me on top of him so that I could ride him until everything else fell away.

Lorenzo moved from my mouth to my neck. He nuzzled and nibbled at the skin, and I gasped when he nipped a little harder, sending short bursts of pain through my body. The pain was laced with pure pleasure, and he only egged me on.
