“I know,” I said. “That’s why I’m here.”

Noah shook his head and looked over my shoulder. I heard the car a moment later, and then the black car that drove the Forgers around most of the time pulled up.

Celine got out of the backseat. She looked at me and her eyes were fiery immediately.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” she demanded.

“I need to talk to you.”

She shook her head. “I have nothing to say to you.”

“Then just listen,” I pleaded. “If you don’t like what I have to say, I’ll go, and you’ll never have to see me again.”

She hesitated, thinking about it.

“I can get this asshole off the property in a blink,” Noah offered.

“No,” Celine said. “It’s fine. I’ll hear what he has to say.”

Noah hesitated before he nodded. He turned to me, and his eyes were filled with warning. I nodded at him—I knew I was on thin ice, but I wasn’t here to cause shit. All I wanted to do was tell Celine what a dickhead I’d been, to tell her how I really felt, and let her do what she needed to do with that information.

When Noah walked inside, the driver got out of the car Celine had arrived in and opened the trunk. He took out a hiking backpack and two bags filled with other things that looked a lot like hiking gear.

“Where can I put this, Miss?” he asked politely.

“In my room is fine,” Celine said. “Thanks.”

The driver nodded and disappeared into the house.

“What’s that?” I asked.

“None of your business,” Celine snapped. “Are you planning on groveling or is this just a waste of my time?”

I smirked. Celine was a firecracker, and I couldn’t help but take her in and marvel at the incredible beauty she was. She was drama on wheels, but God, drama had never looked this good.

“I was wrong,” I said. “I shouldn’t have left you. Not when we were kids. Not when I went to Italy.”

She folded her arms over her chest.

“And not in the forest, either. I should have come back for you every fucking time. I should have fought for you because I fell in love with you the moment I met you, and no one else has ever meant more to me since.”

She just glared at me.

“I kept pushing in through your walls,” I continued. The fact that she refused to speak at all was unnerving, but shedidsay that she had nothing to say to me. “I kept trying to reach you, to fight your backlash and your attempts to keep me at a distance because I wanted to get closer to you, to the person I know you are underneath all that. I just didn’t realize what would happen when I did.”

“What happened?” she asked.

“I fell so fucking hard for you, I couldn’t breathe without you. I didn’t realize it would be that serious. I didn’t realize I would fall head over heels, madly in love with you. When I did and we got lost… I should have been able to protect you.”

“The storm wasn’t your fault,” Celine said with a small frown.

“No, but you didn’t know anything about camping and surviving, and I was the one who pushed you into going.”

“You didn’t push me into anything,” Celine said. “I was the one who decided to go. You don’t get to tell me what I can and can’t do.”

I shook my head. She was such a fighter, always coming up against me, always challenging me.

“I was terrified that I’d fucked it all up for you, okay? I was in love with you and unable to look after you, and you deserve a man who can give it all to you, someone who can handle your crap and protect you at the same time, and I didn’t do that.”
