Her restored confidence seems to shrink just as soon as it returns when Ris bursts out laughing.

“Oh no you won’t Rhovier. I’m personally going to oversee your barring from ever setting foot in Le Lazurt and other theaters ever again!”

Rhovier draws herself up as if to make a comeback but instead, she only shrieks at us. Spinning around violently, she stomps away in an angry march, disappearing into the rainy streets.

Ris, letting out a heavy sigh as if exhausted, turns around and peers down at Ezra and I. Only now do I notice I haven’t stopped crying, my tears becoming lost in the rain.

“Are you alright?” he asks, stopping down to us.

“I’m okay, I just… I can’t believe you did that for me.”

Ris tilts his head in confusion.

“What do you mean?”

Time to come clean.

“I have to admit something to you…”

“Sienna, what is it? You know you can tell me anything,” he reassures me.

“Ever since you came back into my life, I was worried about this kind of thing happening. I always thought that you might take her side against mine.”

Ris shakes his head, pulling me into his arms.

“Why would you ever think that? You mean more to me than anything.”

“Because I felt like nothing but a burden to you, even two years ago. I was watching you grow popular and it felt like I was getting in the way of that.

“You never thought I’d pick the side of my son’s mother?”

“I thought you might but… That’s your sister Ris. I’m only a human, and part of what she said is true. How could someone like me ever hope for a dark elf to stand up against his own kind for my sake?”

He leans down, planting a gentle kiss on my forehead.

“That’s enough,” he whispers. “I think we should get home before we catch an illness.”

“But what about your performance? Don’t you want to go celebrate?”

“Your reaction to my show tonight gave me everything I wanted to feel this evening. Nothing else is going to top that.”

“Okay,” I agree.

Internally, I’m still trying to process all of what just happened. A wave of pain ignites through my head as I grab my temples.

“Ezra,” says Ris. “Can you be a good boy and help Mama to her feet with me?”

“Yeah,” nods Ezra. “Help Mama.”

Together, they pull me to my feet.

“Can you walk?”

“I’m fine, she only slapped me a few times.”

“You won’t have to worry about her anymore.”

I only wish you were saying that two years ago before all of this shit.
