Rarely, though, do we actually have to interact. I’m primarily over the wait staff as their shift leader. And he’s some washed up guard they let stand on the back wall and make people uncomfortable.

But when we do, the staff is on edge. They all know that we are as liable to burn them with our fire as we are to hurt each other. They keep a wide berth from us, which means that Lykan and I are often left alone when facing off.

Being alone, standing up to a big dark elf bully, doesn’t frighten me.

Maybe it should, but there’s something about the way he wears this cocky smirk that makes my stomach coil tight and I can’t even bear to look at him anymore.

Just then, I notice someone shift out my peripheral. I turn to see a customer with an empty glass, and I catch his eye. “I’ll be right there,” I mouth so as not to disrespect Ris.

Stopping by the bar first, I make my way back into the crowd to trade his empty glass for a full one, but as I turn away, someone pinches my ass. I yelp, quickly covering my mouth as I jump forward. The elf behind me laughs, gripping my thigh as he spins me toward him.

“How much for you?”

I shake my head, swallowing hard. It’s rare I have to encounter this here, but it’s easy to turn them down. “We don’t make those kinds of sells here.”

He jerks me forward, my balance thrown off with one of my legs in his grasp. I almost stumble straight into his lap, but I catch myself on the back of his chair.

“Everyone has a price–”

An arm wraps around my waist, but this one is careful not to touch anything it shouldn’t. In fact, my body instinctively leans into whoever it is, his presence immediately comforting. I don’t have the wherewithal to consider what that means other than getting away from the gropey hand.

I just have to hope that I am not going to end up in a worse situation.

I’m hauled back onto my feet as a deep voice rumbles, “No. She doesn’t.” My heart nearly stops beating at that.

That voice. It can’t be. That can’t be the person who would help me. He’d rather watch me get dragged away kicking and screaming.

Right?

But it’s exactly who I should expect. As a guard, he’s supposed to protect the girls as much as the artists. There’s a strict policy in place that this guy is trying to break.

My bare back slams hard into clothed muscles, and I stiffen as his hand slides down my thigh. You’ve got to be kidding me.

But then he pries the patron’s hand off of me, taking a step back and pulling me with him. All I can feel is his firm touch, doing things to my head it shouldn’t, as he carefully avoids any place that could make me feel sexual.

“The only thing available for purchase here are the drinks and the show.” I tilt my head to see if I was right, but I already knew I was. I watch as Lykan’s jaw clenches, his nostrils flaring. “Sir.” The way he says it sounds more like a slur than a sign of respect.

He looks pissed, and when it’s not directed at me, I realize just howgoodit looks on his features. Like he was meant for this brooding expression he always wears.

His gaze drops to me then, and my stomach clenches as his dark eyes connect with mine. Fuck, why is my mouth so dry?

I don’t think I’ve ever looked closely enough at Lykan to realize how handsome he is, but my body seems to have noticed it. A thrill shoots through me with every brush of his hand, which he keeps pressed to my lower back as he guides me past the bar to the service hallway behind it.

Lykan stops as soon as we are behind the door, spinning to face me. My body feels so cold without his touch, but he fixes that immediately. He places a hand on the wall, looming over me.

My body is so reactive to everything he does. His warmth swarms me as I’m trapped between him and the wood, and my knees go weak at the intensity of his gaze.

Maybe I’m just being foolish, but I don’t think I see hate in them right now. I think there is something else lurking, and that is what has been building all of this tension.

I can’t say I’m even mad about being trapped by a big, muscular warrior who makes my entire body pulse with adrenaline.

Then his eyes drop from mine for the first time since that first day.

And they land right on my lips.

THE END.
